Today, Michael and I finished up the tutorials in the first section of Chapter 2, and made it through 3 of the Practice assignments. We reviewed some solving strategies and I assigned practice problems for that as well as the Math Mavericks Chapter 1 review.
We continued working through the Set Builder Notation tutorial. We did finish it, but that is all we were able to complete because there was a lot of background supplementary instruction required in order for him to understand it. I assigned some review from the previous chapter, and also some exercises from an Algebra 1 text book to review the solving strategies we covered in our first week of sessions.
Assignment
Review: Ch.1-Sect.2, Practice #'s 2-5; Text page 81 #'s 2,3,5,8,11,12,13 and page 151 #'s 90-97
We began with reviewing the tutorial examples we left off with yesterday. Afterward, we started a new tutorial learning about Set Builder notation. As we worked through the examples, we reached a point where it was necessary to have a supplementary review lesson on solving quadratic equations using the Square Root method.
Assignment
Review the practice assignments in Chapter 1, Section 1: Practice 1 and Section 2: Practice 2
Michael and I reviewed some basics such as: simplifying and evaluating expressions using order of operations, distribution, etc. & translating word phrases to math expressions
Michael and I started Chapter 2 today! We learned the definitions of the different sets of real numbers, and focused on understanding how to classify numbers according to those definitions. Special attention was given to understanding rational numbers vs. irrational numbers, as well as what makes a number non-real.
We finished up the topics in Chapter 1 today after covering DeMorgan's Laws for negating conjunctions and disjunctions. We then began reviewing the entire chapter by working through the Chapter Test.
We started and almost finished Section II today including all tutorials and most of the practice; moving right along! This section covered 'if-then' statements and truth tables including negation, and negating 'some' or 'all' statements.
Yesterday we finished all of the tutorials in the first section of Chapter 1. Today we worked through the practice assignments involving truth tables, conjunctions, disjunctions, and negation.
Today we started the Math Mavericks Modern Mathematics course. We continued our approach of recording all work into his spiral notebook, taking care to head and date each page. We work through each of the tutorials, and then through each of the corresponding practice assignments.
