Hypothesis Testing: P-value vs. Critical Value methods
Lesson Outline
We worked two long example problems text and compared the P-Value and Critical Value methods of hypothesis testing. We started by "translating" the statement of the problem into Null Hypothesis and Alternative Hypothesis. We associated sample distributions with the parameter being examined.

Lesson Comments
Pablo seems to have a solid and well-organized grasp of the material.
We spent much of the session comparing two methods of hypothesis testing illustrated in a text book example problem. We spent the remainder of the period discussing and comparing Type I and Type II errors .
Assignment
Complete first example problem in Chapter 9.

Lesson Comments
This was a very fruitful session in which we were able to ties together a bunch of important threads in hypothesis testing.
We examined Section 8.3 in the text, extensive example problems in setting up null and alternative hypotheses, finding the test statistic, and Type I and Type II errors.
Assignment
Work through example problems from class

Lesson Comments
Pablo seems to understand the material well. I suggested that he try and actually work the problems his teacher shows in class, rather than just watching the Power Point and understanding the process as it is explained.
We discussed the formulation of Null Hypotheses and Alternative Hypotheses. We went over translating a word problem (homework assignment) into hypotheses and relevant formulas reject/fail to reject the null hypothesis.
Assignment
Review the section in Chapter 7 about the Chi-Squared distribution.

Lesson Comments
Pablo seemed to have a solid understanding by the time he left.
Converting non-standard normal values to standard normal.
Lesson Outline
We worked through several examples from Chapter 6 of the text, including some interesting problems on bone density testing, size hiring limits for flight crews and ceiling height in passenger cabins of airplanes. These involved making connections between scores and probabilities. We also found probabilities of non-standard normally distributed values by converting them to z-scores and finding the associated probability from a standard normal table.

Lesson Comments
Pablo's confidence seems to be on the rise. We'll review Chapter 7 tomorrow.
We discussed how area under a probabiluity density function curve is equal to one and why. I emphasized the correlation between area under the curve and probability. We worked through a number of example problems in the text.

We arranged that Pablo would come for tutoring on Mondays and Tuesdays at 12:30 till 1:30.
Devon will be prepared for her test. She must be able to find confidence intervals for means and proportions.

Lesson Comments
Devon missed several classes and her first two tutoring sessions. She hasn't put enough work in, and is not feeling confident about this test. She will be able to retake it if she doesn't do well.
