Ben indicated that he would like to learn about the building of the White House. We watched an animated video on the subject and read "The Story of the White House for Kids". We also read sections of "The White House for Kids" selecting only parts that were of interest. We attempted a virtual tour, but it left a bit to be desired.

After reviewing previous events, Hank read the next three chapters in "The War That Saved My Life". We focused on using inference to understand what isn't expressly stated. Hank searched for clues the author gave to show that a character is blind and supports the prediction that Ada and Margaret will be friends.

After a quick review of events, Hank read the next three chapters in 'The War That Saved My Life.' While Jamie continues to want to go home, Ada lets slip that she never wants to return to Mam. Ms. Smith and Ada share some moments of connection; Hank thinks this will strengthen their relationship. He is continuously surprised by Ada's sometimes humorous lack of world (and word) knowledge. As the war officially begins, an airfield built across from Butter's pasture will likely play an important role in the story.

Ben completed the story of Stone Fox today with its surprising ending. He pointed out clues from early in the story that foreshadowed Searchlight's tragic death. He also gave his opinion and recommendation for reading the book. We talked about the theme, and Ben decided it was simply "love." We looked a bit more closely at the character Stone Fox and what we might learn from his actions in the story.

Ben read an article on Newsela about "How a Dog Became Mayor of a California Town." Curious and with no predictions, Ben read to find out how this happened. After a short review, Ben continued reading 'Stone Fox.' As he predicted, Little Willy does enter the race and is confident he will win. We notice that the author makes it seem that Willy may be wrong about his chances when other racers decide not to enter because "you couldn't blame people for wanting to save their money." We note that Willie is the underdog in this race, and Ben knows that underdogs often come out on top in stories. We also find out that Stone Fox can be mean when he slaps Willie for petting his dogs.

Hank read an article on Newsela about the Avengers Campus at Disneyland. The article explained the many ways the Avenger theme is coming to life with a new digital gesture recognition system and all the typical Disney-style applications.
He read the next two chapters in 'The War That Saved My Life,' where Ada and Jamie begin to settle into their new life with Ms. Smith. Hank noticed that Ada tells us again that she does not like to be touched, and she is very uncomfortable with the doctor's examination of her foot. Also, we were surprised by how Ada and Jamie react to life in their new home. Jamie, usually easygoing and compliant, becomes defiant and Ada, always his defender, lashes out at him angrily when she feels he will jeopardize their place with Ms. Smith. Are her feelings about Butter stronger than her desire to protect her brother?

Ben read a Dogo News article about the rescue of "The World's Loneliest Elephant" from Pakistan to a million-acre refuge in Cambodia. We reviewed what we learned about the characters in 'Stone Fox' and what we believed to be the problem. However, in today's reading, a new and larger problem is revealed. Ben made some clever inferences as he read, and he predicted what Little Willie will do to solve the problem. He also inferred some of the obstacles Willie may face.
