Worked with Dylan reviewing for test. Talked with mom about getting teacher to break the test into sections and help Dylan use the test taking strategies we worked on during the review. I will be working with him on Sunday and Tuesday of next week.
Dylan and I reviewed many aspects of the book, A Land Remembered by Patrick Smith. As we talked we collaborated on a chart outlining the following: characters (beliefs, values, qualities), life events, and themes. We discussed specific examples of each, delving deeply into the themes of the book. We also discussed setting, plot, and timeline of events in preparation for his in-class discussion next week.
I met with Dylan and his mother to discuss his strengths, interests, and areas of need during our session today. We talked about his habits, prior and upcoming school work, and his transition to 8th grade. We discussed both of their expectations for our study sessions, and how I can best be of help.
This was our last session together, so I decided to read a fun story. Dylan had never heard of it, and it was a great vehicle to discuss the idea of asking questions about the story while reading. I've stressed looking at things from all perspectives all year with Dylan, and I think he's gotten a lot out of it.
Dylan finally had a paper I could look over, and we had a good discussion about constructive criticism and some things he could have done to improve his paper. We then turned our focus to the short story "The Foghorn", in which Dylan was excellent as usual.
