Sub for Miss Jennifer from 12:30-1:00. During this time Patrick was involved in many Easter activities. Specifically during this time he engaged in a shared read aloud with Mr. Kevin being the reader. The book was titled, Hopper's Easter Surprise. Lesson Outline
Today Patrick was engaged in many fun holiday activities. He colored his own Easter Eggs with crayons and dye. All of the students gathered to celebrate and be creative. He saw how observed the various colors to see what would happen after mixing them. After lunch the students listened to an Easter story read aloud with Mr. Kevin. They made predictions and connections before, during, and after the story. Patrick participated in an Easter Egg Hunt on the playground with his fellow classmates. It was exciting, as they all ran around and tried to think of the places they could be. Afterwards, all of the students were able to make estimations, using their math skills, to guess how many jelly beans were distributed into each container. There were four different sizes. Patrick and his friends completed a jelly bean sorting and graphing activity, as well. They completed crosswords and mazes for additional fun. It was a fun and exciting day for all.

Decoding and Fluency
Lesson Outline
Patrick wanted to start language arts with reading. He chose our non-fiction book about dolphins and whales. We discussed non-fiction and some of the elements of the genre: to inform, find specific information for research, how the table of contents allows us to to find what we need without having to read cover to cover. We explored the title page and it's elements. Patrick scanned the table of contents and chose a dolphin to read about. We took turns reading. During his reading I noticed he was struggling with the word each. After reading we focused on each to build other words and then decoded words (containing each) within sentences. I explained that once you know one small word, you can read and write much larger, seemingly more challenging words. Then we reread the decodable book My Pug Has Fun focusing on fluency.

Lesson Comments
We had a good session today. Patrick did great working with the word each. He definitely struggled with the decodable book even seeing it for the fourth time. He told me he was nervous and didn't want to read. I asked him what would make him feel better about it and he asked me not to time him. I agreed and he seemed to relax. He struggles tremendously reading p, b and d correctly. After reading we worked on looking at the individual letters on the board. He said he got confused because they all look the same except for the lines. I explained that the lines are what make the sounds different. That seemed to help him out! We will continue on the same decodable until I see progress. I know repeated readings are the best way to improve fluency:)

Review & Skip Counting by 2s
Lesson Outline
Patrick and I began with a short review. I think it is important to touch on all of the concepts we have covered daily to keep them fresh in his mind. He was very successful in our review. We played a game to practice identifying even and odd numbers. Patrick enjoyed the game:) Then we completed a 100's chart skip counting by 2's. I modeled how to complete the first 2 rows of the chart and then Patrick completed the next 2 rows. I pointed out the repeating pattern noticeable in the ones place. We chanted 2-4-6-8 who do you appreciate? several times to help him remember the evens and the even pattern in the base-10 counting system.

Lesson Comments
It was amazing to see the difference in fluency and success rate when Patrick is one-on-one and with company of others. Yesterday when we spent our math time with Miss Jennifer and Stephen I was surprised to see him struggle in speed and computation. Today when we were one-on-one he was fluent and accurate. I think Patrick is a nervous learner and easily intimidated. I would love to see him stay one more year.

Lesson Outline
Patrick started out with a quick math warm-up and then Miss Jennifer invited us to join her and Stephen for math. The boys watched a Brain-Pop video on counting coins and then worked with real coins to answer the quizzes after the video. Then Miss Jennifer gave the boys various opportunities to make different amounts of change. Lastly, they played a bingo type game of counting coins. I think it was fun and motivating for Patrick to get to work with Stephen!

It was great to see how happy Patrick was to work with Stephen today. He tried hard to keep up with Stephen but began to struggle a little. I will go back to strengthen his skip-counting skills. I think he may have become a little self-concious about the difference between himself and Stephen, but overall it was a great lesson and experience for him. Miss Jennifer has great energy!

Fluency and Decoding
Lesson Outline
Today our focus in language arts was decoding and fluency. Patrick built words using -ug, -it, and -in. He seemed to do fine with this, but would then randomly add a word that did not fit. For example, he added at to the -it column. I asked him to explain how he determined if a word fit. At first he said that they have to look alike and then he said they have to sound alike:) When we went back to check the words he was able to determine what words did not fit. Then I explained that we were going to be working on our fluency or "reading like talking" through repeated reading and setting goals for speed and word accuracy. We began with the decodable book My Pug Has Fun from Reading A to Z.com

Lesson Comments
Today was a hard day for me with Patrick because I saw how afraid he is of failure. When I discussed with him that we were going to work on fluency his faced dropped and he turned bright read. He is so afraid he can't do things he doesn't want to try. I did my best to encourage him and let him know that even if he doesn't meet his goal today, that I am there to help him no matter how long it takes.
