JM was very interested in the reality of the origins of these contemporary fictional characters. He seemed to understand the fundamental differences of philosophy and roles in Japan's feudal past.
Read 'Lo-Jack and the Pirates' (similar to Amelia Bedelia) he loved it. Wrote summary of the book.
