We discussed the assigned questions for which that Xavier had difficulty. This led to a review of the slope intercept form of an equation. We then did several more example problems.
Today we completed and reviewed Mod 2 of an SAT practice test. We addressed the proper use of transition phrases and the note summarization questions. As Kaitlin had questions about solving the note summarization test questions ,I provided strategies : critically focus on the question; many of the answers accurately summarize the notes but do not answer the exact question which may ask for a summary that emphasizes a difference, or a summary that introduces a topic to an audience not familiar with the subject of the passage. Using this technique ,we reviewed the specific notes and discussed why to eliminate those notes that are not responsive to the specific question.

During tonight's Reading SAT prep session, Xavier was well focused and receptive to my numerous practice exercises and various specific SAT test strategy recommendations.
Today we reviewed Kaitlin's SAT practice test homework . She is doing well answering the spectrum of questions: vocabulary, logic, and grammar. We spent some time today on a difficult bar graph data question . I walked Kaitlin through how to solve the more difficult questions by aligning each proposed answer against the data and eliminating those responses that fail to accurately describe the data. We further worked on identifying in textual passages the writer's hypothesis or conclusion in order to address inference questions that require the student to identify answers that either strengthen or weaken the writer's hypothesis.
We continued studying and working on more advanced SAT skills today. I first included instruction on punctuating complex sentences with both commas and semi colons. Next, we discussed the proper and logical use of transition words by categorizing them as "And " words or "But "words" or chronological words. We further addressed note summarization skills as tested on the exam, We then reviewed Kaitlin's SAT homework on all of these areas. She has significantly improved her test taking skills and analysis since the beginning of the year.

We have been working on AP essay writing and SAT prep during our sessions. Today, we picked up our SAt prep. I reviewed strategies for addressing "main idea" questions and data based questions. As we reviewed Kaitlin's work on the SAT practice test, I also provided grammar instruction on subject-verb agreement and the use of semi-colons. Kaitlin did extremely well on her practice test work.
