Today Elle continued to work on her Texas research project. She is using a 3-sided, stand alone board for her presentation. We will continue to work on this during last period today.

Elle was very loud and somewhat disruptive today - not with me, but when she flings her door open to use the restroom or to get a pair of scissors, she just creates noise in public spaces. I gently spoke with her about volume level and respecting shared space with others. It seemed like Elle was off balance today. I spoke with Tara about it.
Today we began to study Texas, Elle's home state. She was very excited throughout the lesson. Elle played me some popular songs from Texas, including the Texas State Song and the TCU Fight Song. She began to make a design board about Texas. We will continue this project throughout the week.

This is last period and the first class I have taught here today and I have been here since first period at 9:00AM this morning because this is what my schedule for today - received at 12:00am - directed me to do. I truly hope we can find a way to stabilize the schedule and optimize my teaching and interaction with students during the time I am here at school. I pushed so hard to come back to school after breaking my heel and I am saddened by how my schedule has changed and how I am being utilized.
Today, through Elle's research, we learned when FL became a state. (March 3, 1845) What side of the Civil War was FL on...the Confederacy or the Union? FL fought with the Confederacy. Slavery was legal in Florida! This was very disappointing for Elle to learn. We then focused on current events.
Current event review. We reviewed and spent some time playing the interactive game, "Oregon Trail." We spent some time learning about the history of Elle's home state, Texas, today, too.

I got confused and accidently spent an extra hour with Elle today. I received my first schedule for today at 12:00am this morning and it said I was to first meet with Elle at 10:00am this morning. I did not notice a revised schedule sent to me at 1:11am this morning that said I was not to meet with Elle until 11:00am this morning. Therefore, I began class with Elle at 10:00am this morning, according to the first schedule sent to me at midnight.
Global Warming: Nature Cimate Change or Man-made Catastrophy???
Lesson Outline
In our prior lesson, Bobby and I began to explore the Global Warming controversy/debate. Upon the start this lesson, Bobby quickly mentioned that he had seen a new report updating the urgency of Climate Change researchers. I looked up the recent article and we began to discuss the potential causes and evidence of prior cataclysmic events. He addressed rising sea levels, changes in water salination and its effects on weather, and past climate change. Then, we looked at the potential causes of this change, and discussed perhaps the motivation behind different reports and people's lack of action or change related to the matter. I left him with an assignment for our next lesson to research the two sides further, so we can evaluate the arguments much more to determine there possible validity.
Assignment
Research opposing sides of this debate, and critically argue against each side using his own arguments/intuition, along with certain scientific facts and other evidences.
Today we continue our unit on the geographic history of FL. We began with the indigenous peoples who lived here, the arrival of the Spanish and the settlement of St. Augustine, the oldest city in the U.S. We will continue this unit to learn more things about Florida's history, geography and statehood. Elle is starting a display board on FL today. We will continue to add to it throughout the unit. We also spent some time on current events to see how the northern part of FL is doing in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael after it hit the FL panhandle yesterday.

Elle was motivated and worked beautifully today. She is fantastic when it comes to research! Elle got so into this project that she requested a third, consecutive hour of social studies today.
We are still going to continue learning about the local geography and history of North PBC. We are also going to spend time learning about the candidates running for Florida's new governor in the upcoming election. Elle really enjoys online research and she was very responsive to researching and learning about the candidates. We will spend more time on this next week.

Elle was having a difficult day today so our class was not as productive as I hoped. Elle's b-day is next Wed., 10/3 and she was obsessing about spending time with Kate this weekend - which Elle has deemed to be her "birthday weekend." Kate cannot be with Elle this weekend and Elle is taking this very hard. Her mood fluctuated quite a bit...from seeming OK and laughing during the majority of our class to then getting very upset and crying a little later in the day. Our class was just before lunch and while Elle articulated her frustration and disappointment, by the time lunch was over, Elle was red in the face and crying.
We had a shorter lesson today and we just started to learn about where we live. We disussed Tequesta, Jupiter Island and part of Jupiter...but we just scratched the surface - lots more to learn! This is especially great for Elle because she is such a recent transplant to the area from Texas.
Today we began a unit on local geography. We are starting with Tequesta, where Elle lives after relocating here from Texas. Palm Beach County has a very interesting history and we are going to start with researching the history of the town of Tequesta, where Elle resides.
Geography, History, Climate and Government in Canada. Learning about Cananda's two cultures. Researched online information about Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

This was supposed to be yesterday's lesson, but we did not have class due to a schedule mix up. Elle and I usually don't meet on Fridays, so we covered yesterday's scheduled lesson today.
