Passing Part 2, Chapters 3 and 4 Review and Discussion
Lesson Outline
1) Review Passing Pt. 1, and its subsequent chapters. Have Jessica place our break reading on a timeline in Larsen's narrative: how is the novel crescendoing? What, ultimately, is the major preoccupation of the work, and how will its characters react when they can no longer "pass" as white?
2) Oral Quiz: What happens in Part 2 of Passing?
3) Discussion Questions: How do Irene's feelings for Clare develop here? Discuss the role of the "honorary negro" in this reading. How is the white/black nightclub considered a liminal/transitive space? How is black culture influencing white society? When white emulate black music and art, are they saying that it is "cool" to be black, or are they denigrating African American art?
4) Read Passing Part 3 Chapter 1.
