Life in the Industrial Age
Lesson Outline
WIll and I previewed the next unit of study: Industrialism and a New Global Age, to better understand the sequence of events (and cause and effects) in the century leading up to World War I. We reviewed and quizzed each other from the 1914 world map, which shows the colonization of many parts of the world at that time (i.e. U.K. colonizing India, etc.). We discussed the spread of industrialization, explosion of new technologies, and the rise of corporations (including captains of industry/robber barons).

Vocab Quiz, Writing Assignment, Watchmen
Lesson Outline
Will took his vocabulary quiz this morning, scoring an easy 18/18 points! After discussing the "clues" in the sentence and how the questions were structured via SAT style, Will and I moved on to discuss his writing prompt. Today, Will was asked to respond to this issue: "Should comics/graphic novels be taught in high schools along with Shakespeare and Dickens?" Will had a lot to say about this topic, and we spent some time discussing the literary canon, its formation and determination of what is/is not considered literature. After our discussion, Will provided a response, saying that he thought that graphic novels offered something that works like Shakespeare and Dickens do not: accessibility, visual stimulation, and a greater invitation into reading by the writer. We ended our lesson with a brief reading of Watchmen, and a discussion of the setting and characters are introduced in the beginning of the work.

Proving Triangles Similar
Lesson Outline
We compared similarity (same shape, (possibly) different sizes) with congruence (same shape AND same size.) Then we explored two different ways to prove a pair of triangles: SAS Postulate and the SSS Theorem. Following that, we worked several example problems on the white board.

Chapter 10 quiz
Lesson Outline
Today's session called for instructor flexibility. At the outset, Will wore a somewhat troubled expression. I asked if anything was wrong. He replied that he was tired for lack of sleep. The reason he gave was that "we got home late last night," a reference to a dinner out yesterday evening. Accordingly, I decided to ease into the session and allowed Will to lead the discussion as he saw fit. The discussion appeared to stimulate him. Observing that he had perked up, I suggested that we move to the question-and-answer period before the Chapter 10 quiz. Will asked a number of good questions, which I answered to the best of my ability. The quiz followed, taking the balance of the session.
