Today we studied how to construct a synthesis essay , how to analyze a synthesis essay prompt, how to form a thesis statement , and last, how to incorporate citations from given sources into the essay. We viewed a short AP video on the subject after which we examined Matthew's homework synthesis essay on pay disparity . I provided instruction on addressing the essay's topic within the first paragraph and demonstrated how to embed source material and citations into the essay. Matthew then made edits and revisions to his draft based on class instruction.

Lesson Outline
During the first segment of the session, we reviewed Matthew's rhetorical analysis essay from yesterday's test. Matthew's work demonstrates a significant improvement in incorporating evidence. However, I discussed my revisions and edits in order to demonstrate how to directly relate the cited evidence to the writer's rhetorical situation , a critical task on the AP exam. I further provided examples of smoothly embedding quotes into the essay. Last, I noted how certain portions of the analyzed text could have been referenced as clearer examples of pathos. Next, we reviewed this weekend's assignment -a synthesis essay using concession and transition phrases. We reviewed the 6 sources provided by the AP in the synthesis question and discussed how to form a thesis statement from the sources that does more than just reiterate the thesis and examples of one of the source documents. Additionally, we studied the graph and data sources and analyzed how the data might be used in the essay.

Unit 9-concession and transitions
Lesson Outline
The course's final unit, Unit 9, focuses on achieving the sophistication point on the AP exam by using both concession and transitions . I provided instruction on how and why concession or acknowledging a contrary view lends credibility to an argument. We discussed how this topic can arise in both the MCQ portion and the essay portion of the exam. I specifically emphasized how concession is critical to the synthesis essay which provides sources from contrasting viewpoints. I then demonstrated how to introduce concession and acknowledgment into an essay by using transitions words such as :" despite, however, while, although and unlike."

In order to prepare JP for tomorrow's Unit 8 test, we today reviewed JP's homework, a Unit 8 review exercise. JP did well on the analytical questions but had difficulties with the composition section. As such, I provided instruction on misplaced modifiers and studying diction to determine style and tone. We further studied the nuances in the AP multiple choice responses , and discussed the importance of carefully paying attention to the precise information sought in the question.
