Arianna's lesson practiced naming parts of whole regions or parts of a set of objects as fractions. She wrote fractions to describe pictures of regions and sets as well as drew pictures to model different fractions. Then, she solved multi-digit addition and subtraction review problems.
1. Arianna completed her Chapter 7 – “South Central Region” test.
2. Arianna began a "Bottle Biography Project", which requires her to read a biography about a famous person in American history and complete a written report. She chose Pocahontas. She will read a book and if necessary, research and gather more information on Pocahontas, then write her report. She will also decorate a 2-liter bottle to look like Pocahontas. All materials will be provided. Today, she began by starting to read the biography provided.
This morning, Arianna and I continued to work on her powerpoint presentation on animal behavior. We researched the biology and habitat of the red fox. For the final project, Arianna will compare the behavior of a red fox to a coral snake.
This morning, Arianna was very reluctant to take the unit test on long division, factors, and prime or composite numbers. Once she began her confidence grew and she did very well, scoring a 91%. I assisted her on the first few and she completed the remaining questions independently. Questions on using mental math to divide, estimating quotients, dividing with remainders, dividing 2- and 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers, factors, and prime or composite numbers were all addressed.
I showed Arianna how to mix flesh colors and where the light areas are on the face. We continued to pay attention to light, medium, and darks on each area of the painting. For texture on the flowers, she used tube paint and a palette knife. She finished her painting and she is very happy with it.
Arianna showed me that science project she is working on. She said that she is working on a research project about the fox and the coral snake. We focused on the fox today. Arianna showed me the picture and the information she had already collected. I showed Arianna how to start preparing her information in a PowerPoint presentation. Arainna chose the slide style that she wanted. She gave her project a title about the behaviors of a fox. The first thing Arianna wanted to focus on was the eating habits of the fox. I showed Arianna that she needed to read a few blurbs about the subject she wanted to write about and then put it in her own words. Arianna read that the fox swallows its food whole. She also read that the fox is an ominvore. She was knowledgeable about the meaning of omnivore. Arianna read that the fox eats squirrels, mice, and other rodents, but it also eats berries, fruits, grasshoppers, and crayfish. This was an interesting project to start for Arianna. She is looking forward to working more on it.

Lesson Comments
It was a pleasure to work with Arianna. She did a great job adapting to a new way of doing a research report. I began to teach her to use the PowerPointl program on her computer.
Arianna completed a successful review of chapters 1-6 of her Harry Potter book. We found an example of hyperbole in the chapter and reviewed two other types of figurative language. She read chapter 8, ‘The Deathday Party’, with a focus on visualizing the text.

Lesson Comments
Arianna was resistant to writing a response to her reading today. She handed me the paper with a “That’s all I got.”and a shrug. She asked to go to the bathroom, and went to get pretzels instead. When I questioned her behavior, she said she was “sensitive” and I made her uncomfortable. I honestly didn’t do anything other than tell her that her response was not her best work and that she could do better.
Insight into Instincts: Arianna read page 386 of her science text. It focused on instincts VS learned behavior in animals. She circled all examples of instinctive behaviors. On page 387, she was given statements about different animals' behaviors. She had to decide if the statement was a learned behavior or an instinct. On page 391, Arianna learned the definition of an animal behaviorist, why animals act the way they do, and how an animal's behavior changes as the animal grows. Arianna and I then took turns being an animal behaviorist. Arianna thought of an object in her room. She had to communicate to me what the object was, without using words. Then it was my turn to do the same. Arianna spent the remainder of her lesson researching the red fox and the coral snake for a research project.

Lesson Comments
I substituted for Adrienne. Lesson plans were left for me to follow.
Arianna began with a spiral review consisting of matching fractions to their models, long division word problems, estimating products, and divisibility rules. Then, we continued to determine if given numbers were prime or composite using certain divisibility rules and writing factor pairs. Arianna finished with correlating lessons in which she identified prime or composite numbers before taking a quiz.
Arianna continued her review of Chapter 7 – “South Central Region”. She is to work in her textbook completing the review questions on pages 252 – 253 preparing for her test.
