How does a person "fish" wires for electrical wiring on existing residential homes? This was the theme of today's lesson. Through wonderful live demonstrations, we found the best way of installing a duplex outlet, a switch, and ceiling fixture wiring. We also learned the difference between a dryer and range outlet. Good session.
Hunter and I read "The Book Thief" together today. We read about the trilogy and the letter to Liesle. In our second session, Hunter finished editing his descriptive essay. He needs to add much more description and conclude.
I had Hunter do some quiz questions on the computer to help review him for his test on Monday. He got most of them correct. We also looked at roots of a polynomial, as well as expanding a binomial with Pascal's triangle. Hunter should be able to do well on the test IF he studies his review questions.

Sorry to say that Mr. Hunter was once again not in the mood to do the work. "Why do I have to know this? I don't want to do this. I don't care about this." were common phrases. I pushed him anyways, and we got through the material as best as I could.
I reviewed polynomial expressions, finding zeros of polynomials, sums and differences of cubes, long division and synthetic division, permutations, and combinations with Hunter. He remembered some of it, and drew a blank on others. When I showed him how to do it, he seemed to understand.

The first 20 or so minutes of our session, Hunter was absorbed in his phone. He was texting people to try to find out if anyone knew where his necklace was from the night before. I proceeded to start reviewing on the board, and told him that he should be listening.
I edited Hunter's rough draft and reviewed reccommended changes with him. He made revisions on the computer and became overwhelmed and unmotivated, so we left it for our next class and continued close reading of "The Book Thief."
I did an oral examination to try to help Hunter remember and clarify concepts. Because Hunter does not enjoy taking notes, it was beneficial to help him and pretest my matching quiz to alter questions that are hard or confusing for him. Homework: He is simply to review for the quiz Monday.

I was remiss in not meeting Hunter for the full time, but he was here. I will be revising the matching portion of the quiz and adding an essay in an effort to be fair and make this quiz a positive experience.
Today we concentrated on nuance in "On Going Home." Didion inserts subtle details and uses many rhetorical devices to engage us and clarify what she is implying. She uses structure to add additional weight, as in the summary sentence "Marriage is the classic betrayal." Hunter is to finish reading the essay and review for the quiz.

I am trying to instill the benefits of careful, unhurried examination. Such work is important after graduation as our former student will encounter social situations or work experiences that demand such skills.
Hunter will be given a worksheet that will breakdown the different sections of the webpage. He will give descriptions to six services: TV installation, AC work, home remodel, estimates, new home work, and plumbing. Each answer must be written in complete sentences. I will give Hunter retail examples that he can use to construct his descriptions.
Hunter will research the characteristics of current Supreme Court justices, list and explain factors that influence nomination selection for justices, and use that information to create a resume for an ideal Supreme Court nominee based on the ideology of the current President and Senate.
