Lesson Comments
Hunter was attentive and asked several relevant questions during the session.
Hunter was to work on reading and spelling multi-syllable words that had closed, open and/or vowel-consonant-e words. The lesson did not take place due to a holiday program.
We read from the textbook about they Aztec peoples, their migration into central Mexico, their political structure, social system, their agriculture, their architecture and the development of what is now Mexico City. We then went to the computer lab for further research on the Maya/Aztec people of Mesoamerica.
Today, Hunter completed a descriptive paragraph, using sensory details. He used MLA format, and we discussed a few weaknesses: capitalization, apostrophes, their/there, commas for cities and states, verb tense shifts, and word choice (avoiding phrases like "flipped out"). We completed exercise 75 on page 90 of his grammar text.
I corrected the Ch. 5-4 and 5-5 HW. Hunter got all of the problems wrong. I explained the concepts he needs to do the HW again. He insisted he was ready for a chapter test. I made up an eleven question test from the Ch. Review in the text. Seeing this as a potential learning opportunity, I answered all of his questions.
Today, Hunter and I reviewed the Personal Narrative genre. He spent some time deciding on a story to write (which was not easy for him, due to a severe case of writer's block), and then wrote a summary of the story he chose. We read a student's sample narrative.
