We are working on her "mental math" skills still. Making pairs that create 10 and then we started using those pairs to create 100. She is gradually improving and retaining.
Gracyn and I continued in the text learning about the expedition of Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea. We followed their journey on the map. We also watched a short video on Lewis and Clark on BrainPop. Gracyn created a map of the community and gave me directions, as a tourist, to get from one location to another. Gracyn brought back a book from the library about Rosa Parks! It is entitled "Rosa Parks" by Christine Taylor-Butler. I was proud to find that she had interest in her story after we learned about her last week. We read the book today, but did not finish. We also finished coloring flash cards and reviewed landforms and bodies of water.
design fundamentals. Gracyn worked some more on her "spring" lady painting. She then started a new painting of an eastern bluebird, which is the state bird of New York. She also created a background for this piece.
We began our lesson with a 5 minute timed addition facts assessment. Gracyn focused on using her strategies for speed and efficiency. Her lesson focused on how to use place value to find 10 more, 10 less, 100 more, or 100 less. She was given numbers up to 1,000 and changed the tens place or hundreds place by one more or less to represent the new number. We finished with writing number words. Gracyn wrote the words zero through ten, the teen numbers, and multiples of ten. Then, she practiced writing the words together.
Gracyn and I went to the library to select books for this week. She made some good choices for guided reading and some independent level books to take with her next week. We read another chapter of 'The Little Princess' and she made a strong inference about the new neighbor next door being her father. She supported her idea with clues from the text. She read 'Katie Woo, The Tricky Tooth' for guided reading, focusing on the pacing aspect of fluency. So happy to have her here all week!
Today Gracyn and I researched some new ice cream recipes. We watched few different chefs make ice cream. Gracyn and I both thought the gelato looked the best.
Today, we reviewed the music alphabet, and Gracyn memorized it in descending order. We reviewed note values and names. We further discussed the composers Tchaikovsky, Mozart and Beethoven; their respective periods of classsical music; and Gracyn listened to more of their pieces. Gracyn's appreciation of classical music is considerable and impressive in such a young student!
Gracyn continued the lesson on butterflies today. She observed the eggs, caterpillars and the chrysalis in the butterfly habitat and we discussed the changes she noticed since Monday. We read a book together called, "Marc Learns to Fly" which describes the butterfly life cycle and is also a fictional story about a butterfly who eats through pages of a book and learns to read. After the book, she answered written questions about the story. We went over vocabulary words in the story such as devoured, exhausted, larva and pupa and she completed a fill in the blank paragraph about the story with the vocabulary words.
