Gracyn continued working on place value today. She used patterns to help her find all of the ways to show a number with tens and ones. Gracyn looked at word problems and determined what needed to be found and the information given. Then, a pattern was found and used to help solve the problems. We finished with two-digit addition with regrouping practice problems.
Gracyn did science through Skype today. I showed her the seeds that had germinated in her glove and we discussed which ones had grown and which ones had not. She made observations of each seed and drew a picture of the glove and what each sprout looked like. The only one that had not sprouted was okra. When we checked the days of germination for an okra seed it was 12-14 days so we decided there hasn't been enough time yet. She watched a Magic School Bus episode on plants and learned about how plants make their own food from air, water, and sunlight. She answered ten questions about the episode after it was over.
Gracyn and I worked on how we can show the value of a number in different ways. For place value practice, Gracyn was given a number and then using tens and ones represented the number in three different ways. She also solved place value riddles in which clues were given and Gracyn had a find the same number but written in a different form.
Gracyn and I skyped gymnastics today. It was great that she had her beam to use. After warming up and stretching, we practiced her cartwheels on the beam a lot. She also showed me how she can swing from her bed! We did some handstands against the wall to improve her core strength. She also did some headstands on her nice, big bed :). Since we cannot practice her back walkovers and back handsprings while she is away, I have given her some strengthening and flexibility assignments.
Gracyn and I discussed money, focusing on the coins. We reviewed their names, their worth, and their attributes. Also, we went over how many pennies, nickels, dimes, or quarters are needed to make a dollar. Then, Gracyn was shown groups of coins in order to add them together to find the total amount of money.
Gracyn and I read 'You Can Be A Friend', a story about befriending a physically disabled girl. This story teaches a valuable lesson about friendship and Gracyn readily identified and connected to it. She read a Raz story for guided reading and a new Fly Guy book for fluency practice. We added some phonics lessons to her folder and made copies of her writing so that she could work on it while she is away.
Gracyn and I began a new chapter book, 'Judy Moody and the Bad Luck Penny'. We stopped and talked to make connections and predictions as we read,. She read a Raz story 'Smaller and Smaller' for guided reading, excellent fluency and comprehension. Gracyn wrote a short response to the story on the Raz site.
Today we read the article she has published in the school newspaper!! Also, we went over the sounds of the double LL and the J/G in Spanish comparing them to the English ones and the silent H. In addition, we went over feelings, by answering the question: ¿Cómo estás?
We played Math Bingo, including a "the number that is the sum" game to help in her mental addition and subtraction skills. She colored all the even numbers on a number chart and then we finished the lesson with a story from the Poppleton book.
Sub: Academic games. Gracyn and I played several rounds of Mancala. We read the rules and refreshed our memories on how to play. Gracyn learned very quickly and ended up winning 2 out of 3 games. We then went outdoors for some fresh air and swings in the hammock.
