Today we went for a walk since Gracyn said that she prefers to work outside. We introduced ourselves and made a drawing of ourselves. We did a role play activity and practiced our oral skills.
Gracyn completed mixed addition and subtraction problems focusing on different strategies learned. Make a ten, doubles facts, doubles plus one, and adding ones and tens were the focused strategies. Gracyn's main challenge was paying attention to the plus and minus sign when solving the problems but did a great job. She also finished a few word problems, focusing on the vocabulary used and drawing pictures to solve.
Gracyn and I had a great session today! I can tell she has been working on her flexibility at home, I have seen improvement in her splits. She was really focused on improving some her basic skills. We spent a good amount of time on handstands, walkovers and cartwheels on beam. We also reviewed some other basics including: full turns, leaps and jumps. We also played a few balancing games on the beam.
Gracyn began working on her animal research project today. We reviewed the classifications of animals and the characteristics of each one. We went to the library and she chose to research the snow leopard. She picked out three books on snow leopards and we began reading them for her research. We discussed how snow leopards are endangered, what that means, and the reasons why they are endangered.
For motivational and educational purposes, we began with my playing some classical piano music. Gracyn definitely demonstrates an appreciation of music. Then we practiced "At the Zoo" and worked on counting properly, with particular focus on dotted half notes. We reviewed the "Knuckle Song" in its entirety and played our duet.
Gracyn and I discussed geography today. We used the globe, "Maps... Graphs.... Globes" and several maps to identify landforms, continents, directions and locations. Gracyn completed activities demonstrating her ability to read a map and to label continents and oceans on a world map.
Gracyn began today's lesson by solving two-digit addition problems, making sure to begin with the ones column and then move to the tens. Next, Gracyn explained and showed how to solve addition word problems using different strategies. She carefully read the problem to determine which information was given and what information she needed to use to find the solution. Finally, Gracyn worked on an add 10 coloring worksheet. A die was rolled, ten was added to the number, and the sum was colored a specific color to make a picture.
