Gracyn and I reviewed the story of Tulip Travels the Country in her textbook, since she was not here to see the pictures and was on Skype during that lesson. Today we learned about immigrants and pioneers. We continued in her textbook to read more about voting, government and elections. We read America the Beautiful. She made an election poster to campaign for herself as the next President - because she is cool!
Think addition to subtract was the concept covered in today's lesson. Gracyn worked on problems in which she used an addition fact to find the answer to a subtraction fact. We discussed subtraction problems being comprised of a whole that takes away a part to find the other part. Then, we did addition problems being comprised of two parts added together to find the whole. We used cubes to help model the add to subtract problems. Together, we colored Hester the witch. Gracyn rolled a die and then added 10 to find the correct number to color.
Gracyn continued writing her story about Halloween. Using her graphic organizer, she decided to add 2 sentences about ghosts. Gracyn's choice for read-aloud was "D.W. Flips". She was able to make text-to-self connections. We made text-to-text connections as we recalled, "D.W., Go to Your Room!". Independent reading led to writing about the main idea.

Science Enrichment:

Gracyn and I played a game that showed how plastics end up in the ocean environment. We used the keyboard to make a dolphin jump and spin, and the mouse to capture trash items as they fall into the deep water. Then we moved different items from a pile of trash, into the correct recycle bin. Gracyn was then tasked with coloring in dolphins, as she learned the correct terms for the dorsal fin, flukes and ‘pec’ fin.
We warmed up with "The Knuckle Song" and then worked on "Mary Had a Little Lamb" in its entirety on both the black and white keys.
We played through pages 8-11 in the Bastien primer and reviewed C-D-E, half notes and proper technique.
Today, Gracyn was encouraged to use the different strategies that we have practiced over the last week to solve addition problems. She solved problems by counting on by one, two, and three along with using doubles, doubles plus 1, and doubles minus 1. Together, we had a lot of fun playing doubles fact beach ball toss. A beach ball with the doubles facts 1 - 12 were written on a ball. Whoever caught the ball had to solve the fact before tossing the ball.
