Animalia -
Gracyn and I read the book ‘Animalia’, by Graeme Base. This book provides one illustration for each letter of the alphabet. For each letter, the beautiful illustration contains numerous items, all beginning with the specific letter. Also each page has a boy hiding in amongst the alphabetical objects. Gracyn and I examined each page, finding the different items and saying the word associated with the letter. She searched for the boy and in the process, and practiced saying words starting with the letter. We spent the rest of our time looking at photos from, and talking about, my dolphin research.
Gracyn's lesson today covered the concept of finding the unknown. We first watched a short video about ladybugs and why they have spots. We talked about how sad a ladybug would be if she lost some of her spots but we could help her replace them if we knew how many. We used a large ladybug and placed spots on one wing and the total number below her. Gracyn used counting on and subtraction strategies to find the missing spots. Then, Gracyn completed addition and subtraction problems for fluency and we finished with Arthur's Chicken Pox book.
Today Gracyn made Mini Chocolate Chip Muffins. She measured and put the ingredients into the mixer. After everything was mixed together, Gracyn scooped the batter into the mini muffin pans. We baked the muffins for about 12 minutes. Once the muffins were cooled Gracyn shared a few with her brothers.
Today we worked on our ABC's and concentrated on the letter A. Also we built up vocabulary with words that started with the letter A and reviewed our numbers from 1-10.
Our read aloud today was 'Click,Clack, Moo, Cows That Type" with a strategy focus of inferring. Gracyn read "Cole's Note" independently and practiced the cvce rule in context. We read a nonfiction book about goats as our shared reading book. Our word study continues cvce patterns and previously learned sounds. Gracyn added to her family story.
Today Gracyn was introduced to the game of chess. I like the way chess improves brain function, stimulates synaptic growth and develops cognitive ability. We learned the names of the pieces and how each one moves.

Lesson Comments
Gracyn was not at all interested in Chess so we only spent a few minutes learning it.
Gracyn was absent today. We were going to cover the second lesson in the chapter on the Sun, learn the importance of the sun in relation to Earth, and also the harmful effects the sun can have and different ways to protect ourselves.
