After a brief conversation to establish rapport, we talked about his organization skills and understanding of math concepts. We worked through the concepts from Chapters 4 and 5 of a similar textbook. He is weak in some of the concepts from the earlier chapters. We will work on raising his level of understanding on these in the next few days to prepare him for the final, and give him a solid foundation for moving into new chapters next semester.

Biology:
Mitosis; chapter 10 -

Biology:
Mitosis -
Jack was instructed in the phases of cell division: interphase (G1, S, G2), Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase, and cytokinesis. He was quizzed on the vocabulary and answered the questions in the chapter 10.1 assessment of his biology book. Homework: Jack should read over the diagram of mitosis in his book before class.

In listening to Jack, it seemed clear that he was overwhelmed by Biology more than anything else, despite his mom's assertions that he needed a study schedule. I spoke with Jack and his mom about my observation and they both agreed that a Bio tutor would provide the greatest benefit.
Jack told me that he is behind in Biology, so we looked at what was outstanding. We tackled a virtual lab relating to photosynthesis and cellular respiration. We finished it and he felt more caught up.

Jack needs some help with organizing for sure, but today we had an immediate task to which to attend. I have a feeling that may be our modus operandi.
I organized Jack's 2" thick pile of papers from August into subjects. We assigned different colors of folders to each subject and divided papers into what needs to be brought to school every day and what can be left at home (as well as what can be discarded).

I hope that mom purchases individual notebooks with each color and that Jack can keep up with the process.
