Ayn Rand, "Anthem"
Lesson Outline
Marcos located some additional euphemisms the dystopian society employs to disguise its harsh treatment of citizens ,and I mentioned how the Chinese government today employs the same tactic by imprisoning citizens in indoctrination camps called"re-education camps".We focused on supplementing Marcos' study guide answers on the protagonist's sudden desire to see what he actually looks like consequent to his re-discovery of electricity through his own individual efforts and creativity. Marcos elaborated in class and in his notes on Ayn Rand's philosophy tying one's sense of self and identity to one's individual efforts as opposed to any collective effort. We last looked at Marcos' rewrite of his essay on "Gathering of Old Men" and discussed how he needed to elaborate and add supporting examples from the text with respect to the connection between the identity and heritage of the African-American community and the land . For homework, I assigned reading chapter 7, and 8,answering study guide questions on the reading ,and supplementing portions of the essay.

Statistical Studies
Lesson Outline
Marcos continued watching Algebra Nation teaching videos about Statistical Studies. He took notes and learned to identify population, sample, variable of interest, parameter, and statistic of interest. There are different ways to gather data: sample surveys, observational surveys, and experiments. An experiment applies treatment to a situation. The three principles of experimental design are Randomization, Replication, and Control. Marcos answered questions where he had to identify the type of situation, and identify any problems with the collection of data. He also had to determine whether or not a sampling method was biased or not.

11-1 Simplifying Radicals
Lesson Outline
Today's lesson was lengthy, as I needed to show Marcos several different examples and cases of simplifying radicals. In order for a radical to be simplified, it should have no perfect squares under the radical, and no radicals in the denominator. I taught Marcos that it is best to break the radicand into perfect square factors, but it also works to break it into prime factors and take out pairs of numbers, since the square root of x*x is x. I taught him how to rationalize a denominator by multiplying the numerator and the denominator by the radical in the denominator.
Marcos thought the exercises were fun. His assignment is p. 619-620 (2-24 even, 28-50 even, 75-77)
