Lesson Topic
chemical reaction types
Lesson Outline
Discuss decomposition reactions. Elicit that these are the reverse of the synthesis reactions looked at yesterday. Outline the reaction which takes place in auto air bags, the conversion of sodium nitride to nitrogen gas and sodium when a sparking device in the air bag is activated by a crash. Also outline the decomposition of water into hydrogen and oxygen using electric current.

Lesson Outline
Lab exercise which examines synthesis type reactions. Four different reactions are performed. The reaction of magnesium with oxygen, the reaction of iron with oxygen, the reaction of carbon dioxide with water, and the reaction of calcium carbonate with acid. Each reaction also involved the setting up and production of the needed reactants.

Lesson Topic
types or chemical reactions
Lesson Outline
Derive the definition of a synthesis reaction by examining a few typical synthesis reactions. Derive a general formula for a synthesis reaction. Discuss the various chemical and physical properties of some common reactants and products which are involved in synthesis reactions.

Lesson Topic
balancing equations
Lesson Outline
Practice balancing equations using 3-4 reaction examples. Increase the difficulty for each reaction. Work 1-2 together, then have Ben work 1-2 on his own.

Ben absolutely mastered the process, handling some difficult equatons.
Session Date
Lesson Topic
balancing equations
Lesson Outline
Place a sample reaction on the board and then write the word equation and the skeletal equation. Elicit and discuss which of the laws of chemistry are being broken by the skeletal equation as written. Use molecular models and a double pan balance to show that the conservation of mass law is not adhered to. Determine how to correct this by adding models to each side of he pan balance until balance is achieved. Write a few simpler chemical reactions on the board and show how to balance them by using coefficients. Increase the difficulty of the reactions.

Session Date
Lesson Topic
chemical equations
Lesson Outline
Given a typical chemical reaction, indicate and write the formula for the reactants and the products. Define and discuss the symbols which are found when writing a typical reaction. These include the yield or equal sign, the reactant + sign definition and how it differs from the product + sign. Indicate how to express and/or determine the physical state of each compound or element in the reaction.

Session Date
Lesson Topic
chemical reactions
Lesson Outline
Examine, using molecular models, how molecules and functional units must first separate and then recombine to form a new compound. The basic outline of a chemical reaction is written, and each section defined. This includes the terms and symbols for actants, products, reacts together, yields, plus, and state of matter
