During today's class, we started reviewing the chapter highlights, we started with the development of a new atomic model. We reviewed the following list of vocabulary:
- electromagnetic radiation
- electromagnetic spectrum
- wavelenght
- frequency
-photoelectronic effect
- quantum
- photon
- ground state
- exited state
- line-emission spectrum
- continuous spectrum -
In today's class, Andrew worked on an activity that gave him a series of names of ions and it was his job to name the ion symbol, ion name, and ion formula for each. The activity also asked him some questions about charges, cations and anions.
Outline and diagram the fusion reaction which produces the Sun's energy.
Compare fission to fusion.
Discuss the major problem in trying to produce energy by fusion.
Discuss radioactive isotopes.
Discuss the medicinal use of these isotopes in the diagnosis and treatment of some endocrine disorders.
Finish with a discussion of the difficulty in storage of nuclear waste for thousands of years.
In today’s class, we continued our discussion on naming ionic compounds, including going over the rules and procedures for naming them. Andrew did practice problems afterwards that helped him learn how to write the compounds.
Define fission and nuclear fission
Discuss the instability of the nucleus due to neutron/proton ratio
Outline how the unstable uranium atom becomes a more unstable uranium isotope which will undergo nuclear fission.
Show the products formed by the fission along with the release of energy and 3 neutrons/atom.
From a diagram, show how each released neutron will be absorbed by a uranium nuclei and the fission expands, with the release of tremendous energy.
Label this as a chain reaction, uncontrolled.
In today’s class, we began our introduction into naming ionic compounds. Andrew learned some of the rules for how to name each type of compound and did plenty of practice problems to help drive the concept home.

Lesson Comments
Andrew was in the bathroom for a good amount of our class today due to his stomach being upset so we didn't get through too much material. I will continue what we would have finished today, tomorrow.
