I subbed for Ms. Teresa's Science class (my student Aiden was absent). Chris and I read an article about Biodiversity in Ecosystems. We learned about threats to Biodiversity. We discussed pollution, invasive species, habitat destruction, overexploitation, and climate change.
Today I substituted for Carson's science class (my student Matthew was absent). There were no sub plans left so Carson helped me clean up from Black History Month. Then, we gathered the supplies he would need to finish up his art piece for the show on Thursday.
Define and discuss global change, global climate change, global warming, and the greenhouse effect.
Use examples to demonstrate the physical, chemical and biological changes which are part of global change. Discuss that global climate change involves changes in the weather over a period of time, and that these changes can be natural or anthropogenic.
Explain that global warming refers to a specific aspect of global climate change.
Outline and discuss in detail the 12 steps which create the greenhouse effect.

Joshua was right on target answering the free response questions today
Discuss the specific effects of pesticides and plastics on hormone responses. Concentrate on hormones present during gestation, and on the effect of hormone mimicking chemicals on the development of the fetus
Complete the reading of the paper presented by ABC news which deals with the complex issue of Arctic heating. The long range effects it will have on the economy, shipping, plant and animal life which cannot adapt, and military preparation.
Continuation the discussion on the ABC report which describes the Arctic ice sheet melting, the polar ice caps, and the permafrost. This unit today concentrates on the world wide effect the melting ice caps has on ocean rise, jet stream fluctuations and movement of cold air into regions not prepared.

Unfortunately, the desk top computer in the science lab was occupied, both lap tops available in the cabinet could not access teams. Eventually, a desk top in the library was successful, but the ambient noise made it near impossible.
Continue discussion presented by ABC news regarding melting Arctic ice. Review of arctic amplification theory regarding the greater rise in temperature in the Arctic region than elsewhere.
Diagram to show that the Sun's rays are not reflected as much as previous. The exposed land and water absorb more of the energy, which was previously reflected.
The biggest long-term effect of warming in the Arctic will be sea level rise. The level has risen 6 inches since the industrial revolution.
The loss from the Greenland ice sheet will have its greatest impact on places far away from the Arctic. Sea level rises from melting and continued climate change will exacerbate coastal erosion.
