Practice basic arithmatic skills - adding with doubles
Lesson Outline
11-28-18
Nicholas worked on his homework, completing 9 math problems which required him to add and problem solve. He was tasked with using addition to put together doubles facts used to solve 8 problems with unknowns in varying positions and using equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. This teacher read the word problem to him and Nicholas independently arrived at the correct answer. When he completed his homework, Nicholas was given a timed practice drill in which he was to add two numbers up to a double digit addend. He has been gaining competency in his addition skills, but as yet required prompts to recall that a number added to zero is the number itself - and not zero. His speed and accuracy has also improved. Nicholas achieved a total correct of 44 out of 50 examples, or 88%, which represents a significant gain over his prior performance. In addition, Nicholas did not grow frustrated or give up if he got an incorrect answer but was more upset with himself that he did not get the answer in time to receive credit. All told, he made 3 errors in computation, and had 3 answers for which he did not give the answer in time. Nicholas was proud of his performance and was reminded that tomorrow’s math homework was i-ready. His grandfather picked him up as his mother, Jenn, is still in NY.

Counting - Adding and Subtracting within 20 - Common Core Standard CC.1.OA.5
Lesson Outline
Nicholas arrived in good spirits following the break; he was dropped off by his grandfather. During today's session, Nicholas completed his math homework (page 73 in his Go Math workbook). He practiced counting back 1, 2, or 3 and writing the difference in the answer space provided by each problem. Nicholas has shown improvement, overall, in his computational skills and ability. He has demonstrated both increased competence and confidence when working on the problems, and he is better able to sustain attention to the task for longer periods of time and work on problems with less frustration of late. Nicholas uses his fingers to subtract. Today he became familiar with understanding that the term subtraction may be used in lieu of 'take away,' however he asked to use this teacher's fingers for numbers over 10 instead of using the number line made accessible to him. He also was able to write a subtraction problem involving subtraction with a 2-digit number. Today was a productive session and Nicholas was pleased with his performance.
