We explored three critical final questions : 1 .Is the novel really about Nick or Gatsby and how does narrative structure inform our analysis . 2. Is Gatsby great or is the term sarcastic and 3. Is the novel about something greater or bigger than a microcosm of the Jazz Age. I parsed the final page of the novel and explained the significance of the reference to the "Dutch sailors "who settled America and the relationship between their vision of America and America as an idealized but now corrupted Eden. We then reexamined the three inquiries above in light of the final paragraph comparing human endeavors to boats against the current. During our second session, Nina began drafting her final essay on the novel. We discussed her introductory paragraph and worked on a focused thesis statement that incorporates the essay prompt.
