We finished Chapter 10 of Ender's Game and discussed comprehension questions (verbal responses to questions are logged in Google Teams. Ayden completed a CORE 2nd. Ed. Phonics Assessment. In this assessment, he had to use his knowledge of word sounds to decode familar (real words) and pseudowords. His only errors were for uncommon patterns like words beginning with kn- and gn- and swapping/uncertainty for the letters l and i in words.

MAZE Comprehension Assessment: 55/56 correctly chosen words in context. Ayden's only mistake was due to a lack of vocabulary knowledge for the words, "reservoir" and "contented."
San Diego Quick Assessment Results: Vocabulary words with a predicted Lexile score of 1140-1295 are at Ayden's instructional level. Our goal with vocabulary/reading comprehension will be to improve this score to a 1425.
We reviewed Ender's Game through chapter 9. We began chapter 10 on Audible and are answerign comprehension questions as we move through the chapter. Ayden is dictating verbal responses and I am writing them in Google Teams in a chat thread.

Ayden and I got to know eachother and made a plan for assessment this week, strategies for writing and reading as well as skill building for post-secondary success. We downloaded a Chrome extension called Open Dyslexic which changes font on the internet to be more user-friendly.
Discussed with Ayden what classics he had read in school. He has read the Iliad, the Odyssey, Beowulf, a number of modern classics. I mentioned Ender's Game because it's the latest modern sci-fi I've seen listed on the classics that I thought he might like. I asked him about outlining to write an essay or paper, and he wrote the correct format on the board. He knows the basics.

The Research Paper/"Three Thousand Dollar Death Song" by Wendy Rose
Lesson Outline
We continued writing the research paper. Today we examined the required poem to decide which lines we wanted to use as textual evidence in her paper. We also discussed briefly how to properly construct an in-text citation for a poem. We also read some sample essays published on Book Rags about the short story in order to give Abby an idea of how to incorporate quotes from the story into her paper as effective textual evidence. We continued writing the paper.

Abby missed the first half of the session. I kept texting and calling her. She said that her alarm did not sound and she didn't hear my calls. I also used this time to re-read her paper so far and provide some comments.
