Hunter began writing a 5 paragraph analytical essay in response to "The Lottery". He began by writing the introductory paragraph today, stating an opinion and answering the question why the villagers began the lottery. I assigned reading homework, which is due next Tuesday.
Hunter and I read aloud together in class, taking turns. We read "The Swapping of Nightmares" and discussed questions. We looked at illustrations - Max drew on pages of "Mein Kampf". Hunter will read at home.
Hunter and I read aloud today "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson in class. Afterwards, Hunter wrote an alternate ending. He did a great job at writing, getting a lot accomplished. We discussed grammar, foreshadowing, sentence structure, name choice and new vocabulary we encountered along the way. We also discussed comprehension questions. We planned our strategy for "The Book Thief" in an effort to get through it together next week. He will have guiding questions with him while reading to be certain he is comprehending what he is reading at home.
Hunter has difficulty discussing questions related to his reading, so we will do more reading in class. We went through some guiding questions and quiz questions related to his reading of "The Book Thief". He also chose a quote from Part Four and completed his writen response to it. I asked him to read "The Lottery" at home. He did this, but could not answer most discussion questions afterwards and did not annotate. He could not detect foreshadowing and irony and was supposed to look for this while reading. Again, we might have to do this assignment in class from the beginning. He was also supposed to write an alternate ending and would need to recall what he read to do so.
Hunter completed some online grammar practice. We also read through a lesson on grammar on Quizlet. Hunter put this new knowledge to work in editing his O.J. Simpson essay. He completed this and produced a decent final version, althought completely factual and objective. We discussed the next essay topic and will attempt more figurative language and subjectivity. He began reading "The Lottery" and took it home to continue. He is to write an alternative ending, answer discussion questions, and consider foreshadowing and irony while reading. He will also finish reading the assigned portion of "The Book Thief" before our next class.
Hunter read last night to page 167. He continued in class with a writing assignment and chose a quote for Parts Two and Three to respond to and write about. I re-printed guiding questions for him to answer while reading. He completed an exercise identifying literary techniques based on the reading. We began reading Part Four together in class. HOMEWORK: Read to page 196 and choose a quote to write about.
Hunter brought in his book today. He began the writing assignment by finding a quote from each part of the book and writing why it spoke to him, why it was significant, and identifying the figurative language used. He completed this for part one and began looking through part two. I assigned HOMEWORK - to read to page 167 and to look for a quote in this section, which is part three. He also submitted his resume for a job during our class!
Hunter did not bring book today and did not read any more of it during Thanksgiving break, therefore, we could not analyze, nor discuss writing assignment or guiding questions that went along with the reading. He admitted to not having ever read a book during his High School years. I suggested he bring the book to school and, if necessary, we will read together in class. He spent the hour continuing to write his essay on O.J. Simpson. He began editing with my help. We will continue in our next class.
Hunter still cannot locate his book. We practiced grammar today - agreement, prefixes and suffixes, and vocabulary. Afterwards, Hunter spent time typing his essay about O.J. Simpson and researching to add more information.
Hunter could not locate his book at home, so did not read further. We reviewed vocabulary from the book up to the point where he has read. We read a short biography in "100 World Leaders Who Shaped World History" about Adolf Hitler because Hunter had a lot of questions about him. He began typing his essay about O.J. Simpson. Afterwards, we finished his resume, which he will need to apply for a job at Doggie World. We discussed HOMEWORK: read, choose quotes from each section and write about them, and answer guiding questions as he reads.
