Abby and I discussed the end of the novel. We then began to plan for her literary analysis. Today we skimmed the novel and found six quotes to be used as textual evidence for the body of her essay. We also worked on some review sheets of the novel that highlights some of the themes , literary techniques and symbols important to the understanding of the novel.

We then wrote the thesis statement together. We read for the rest of the time and annotated for textual evidence to be used in the paper.

Lesson Outline
Abby and I discussed the section of the novel she had read for homework. We talked about the cumulative paper for the novel. It will be a literary analysis focusing on three literary devices that the author uses for effect in his novel. It's reading as an author. We began reading the next section of the novel. Abby began annotating for her paper. She will complete the reading section for Thursday's class.

Abby and I read "On Revenge" by Sir Francis Bacon. We answered the text dependent questions and then we talked about the discussion questions. We then discussed pairing chapter 167 in the novel with "On Revenge." We discussed whether the father in the novel was justified with his revenge. At the end of class, we began reading the next section Chapters 179-193 in the novel to be read for tomorrow.

Abby and I talked about the section of the novel that she had read for homework. Then we read Guy de Maupassant's short story. We answered the text dependent questions and then we talked through the discussion questions. We then connected the theme and author's purpose to the novel. We compared the adult children's feelings in the short story to Christopher's feelings in the novel.

She was very enthusiastic about the book and really enjoyed that the author wrote in a different perspective than she was used to. She was very engaged in discussing both the reading and the author. Abby and I watched a Ted Talk about an autistic girl and what her life is like. We discussed how the girl and the main character in the novel (who is autistic) are alike and how they are different. We discussed the plot of the novel as it is unfolding. We read some of the text independently,and Abby will read about 20 pages tonight; so we are ready to discuss tomorrow.

Abby and I continued our study of the Sadlier vocabulary unit one. Abby and I discussed proper usage of the new words in sentences/writing. We read informational text using the new words; there we chose the appropriate words in sample sentences. We then discussed exercises asking for synonyms and antonyms of the words.
