Lesson Outline
We first reviewed the relationship between the bildungsroman and theme of self - discovery . Matthew discussed the symbolic significance of a new set of clothes and a new name as ingredients of identify formation. After reading the plot line that explains Miss Havisham's personal history ,including the day she was jilted, we were better able to explore why Miss Havisham has groomed Estella to be her instrument of revenge on all men. We further analyzed Miss Havisham's martyr complex as she redefines her every acton to be a symbol of her own suffering. We then analyzed a metaphorical description in the text wherein Herbert Pocket comments," no amount of varnish can hide the grain of a wood." We discussed the theme of self discovery and attempts to hide one's true identity or self in the context of this metaphor and the prior discussion on the veneer of clothing. HW- For Tues: read next 3 chapters/Test on chapters 1-25 next week.
