Cabo began the session by reviewing 40 SAT words and then applying them correctly in context. He then read, analyzed, and discussed three chapters of The Last Days of Night. He then wrote to support or negate a quote from the novel. He wrote a clear thesis and supported his position with facts and elaborated on the the facts with details for a stong argument.
Mathew took the final essay test on Macbeth during today's session. I provided word choice and organizational instruction as needed. We will be starting Dickens' Great Expectations next week. HW- read intro material on Dickens and ch 1 /ans study guide on ch 1.
After discussing how to study for the final test on the play, we reviewed Matthew's written homework and worked on edits and revisions to his paragraph on Lady Macbeth's character change. We replaced vague colloquial language with more concise specific words ,reordered sentences, and critically, examined where and how to include textual support. We then viewed ACT V of the Kennedy Center's production of Macbeth followed by Matthew taking a short quiz on Act V. HW- study for final test on Macbeth.
Bella reviewed SAT vocabulary being studied and created synonyms and antonyms for each word. She then wrote on the effect of solitude on the character of Kya. Upon completion, she continued reading and analyzing Where the Crawdads Sing.
Jaydn reviewed SAT vocabulary being studied and wrote a short story using the words appropriately in context. She then read, discussed, and completed Part I of Where the Crawdads Sing. We discussed and analyzed the quote, "loneliness expresses the pain of being alone and solitude expresses the glory of being alone."
Cabo reviewed 40 SAT words being studied and then completed an assessment using the words as antonyms and synonyms in context. He then read and discussed the next two chapters of The Last Days of Night. We discussed Nikola Tesla and read an interview with Elon Musk about Nikola Tesla and his inventions. Cabo then discussed his position on the following topic: If two people work on an invention and one does more of the work, should both people receive credit for the invention?
Bella reviewed SAT vocabulary being studied. She discussed and analyzed two chapters from Where the Crawdads Sing. She began a short essay responding to the following prompt: Based on what is written and inferred, why does the author choose the coastal marsh of North Carolina for the setting of the novel? How is the setting important for the character development of Kya?
Jaydn reviewed SAR vocabulary being studied. She read and discussed chapters from Where the Crawdads Sing. She then wrote responding to the prompt: Use precise words and phrases, and sensory language to describe an incident between the two characters of Kya and Tate.
Cabo read the next three chapters of The Last Days of Night. He then wrote a short essay responding to the discussion question, Why does the author show what Tesla and Agnes have in common, despite seeming to be so different? Cabo was then introduced to the next SAT vocabulary unit of study. He practiced the words in context.
Bella read and discussed a chapter from Where the Crawdads Sing. She then responded to a quote, "the heart pain seeped away like water into the sand. Kya laid her hand on the breathing wet Earth, and the marsh had become her mother." Bella discussed the personification and its effect on Kya's character development.
