I established an analysis rubric for our discussion of the non-fiction book ,"into the Wild". We will focus on locating within the text thoughts and actions of the main character, Chris McCandles ,that reflect the influences of Jack London, Henry Thoreau, and Leo Tolstoy , the three authors we have studied previously this term. Examining the novel's introduction , we first discussed the Tolstoyan renunciation of material wealth and values as an impetus to Chris' decision to give away all of his money and valuables to a stranger. I further emphasized the value of studying the author's chapter introductions -often quotes from Jack London's works. In that regard ,we examined graffiti found at Chris' Alaska bivouac ,a bus, wherein he pronounced ,"Jack London is King" signed Alex Supertramp". We analyzed why Chris placed a positive value on the term tramp and the relationship between Jack London's writings on the Yukon ,which we studied, and Chris' lifestyle choice , specifically, ,the lure of adventure and of risk taking.Last, we reviewed Mathew's homework responses to study guide questions for the first two chapters. HW- r. ch. 4 for Fri/ Chapter 5 and 6 and study guide for 5 and 6 due Monday.
