Cabo also discussed Holden and Phoebe's relationship and who is the adult, and who’s the child in their relationship and why she is

Death of Ivan Ilych /tolstoy
Lesson Outline
In preparation for our final test on the novel later this week, we reviewed Matthew's last test on the novel and addressed any substantive misunderstandings as well as a proliferation of vague pronoun references . I provided suggestions on how to include more detailed but nevertheless succinct answers. I further placed on the board a list of connecting phrases and words to reference when writing in order to achieve cohesive paragraphs. We then discussed the novel focusing on the meaning of word "epiphany" and noting how Ivan is about to experience a deep revelation but as of yet still can not fathom how and why God would end his life with such suffering even though Ivan was so respectable and proper . Where the study guide homework answers were not supported by the novel, I challenged Matthew to find textual support for those responses . This exercise proved productive as Matthew was then readily able to revise his answers independently For HW- finish reading the novel and complete study guide with a focus on whether Ivan's death is a triumph or failure.

Death of Ivan Ilych /tolstoy
Lesson Outline
In the true tradition of the Russian novel, we today explored how a dying Ivan converses with both God and his own soul questioning first ,the meaning of his life and second, the existence of God . He asks God why he suffers, and Matthew ,based on the novel ,discussed how if God had answered Ivan he would have cited Ivan's behavior and values as the cause of his suffering. We then explored the symbolism of the "black sack", and I placed on the board ideas to include in a literary essay including symbolism, figurative language, and theme. We reviewed where in the novel Tolstoy has previously employed these tecniniques. We then traced Ivan's dialogue with his soul and discussed how Ivan begins to realize he was happiest as a child before he was corrupted by propriety and money. Matthew took good notes on these topics and annotated his book accordingly,. HW -read chapter 10 Ans.study guide qs. ch 9 and 10.
