Read chapter 1 together of 1984 to page 15, discussing the setting and character development of Winston. After the introduction of newspeak on page 4, go to the appendix page 298 and learn what newspeak is and how it is expected to evolve.Look at the saying on page 4 and what it makes the reader think. Talk about how Winston's diary entry starts and how he is unsure of the date much less how old he really is. Then read the entry and discuss how it changes from the beginning to the end with sentence structure and ideas written. Bridge that to the 2 Minute Hate session that Winston recalls is the reason he wants to write it.
