Will struggled through an exercise today to learn how to tighten his writing by using commas and eliminating unnecessary words. He has one more example (#3) to complete for homework, as well as the other comma series exercises in his Thurber/White packet.
Continued progress on research related to the chapter of Bill Nye's book, "Why the Bow Tie?" to find out more about the history of neckties (and developing Will's research skills).
Will identified the elements of hyperbole in a passage of the text. His homework question is "Would you like to visit New York as described by E.B. White? Why or why not?"
Will read the informal essay "Here is New York" and has a vocabulary exercise for homework. He has several interpretation and analysis questions to work on as well.
Will continues to research the history of neckties using additional sources. Today he was particularly intrigued by modern opposition to neckties, including their prohibition due to being unsanitary in hospitals in Britain. His homework is to think of what kind of text he would like to read next.
Following up on the chapter of Bill Nye's book, "Why the Bow Tie?," today was dedicated to finding out more about the history of neckties (and developing Will's research skills). Will is creating a Mind Map, a graphic organizer that is new to him, and explored two ancient occurrences of neckties (terra cotta army in China--201 BCE and Trajan's army in 113 CE). We shall continue with this tomorrow in order to further engage in the research process.
Will had read the entire chapter for today's class! What a surprise! He went back to identify the main ideas and the reasons that Bill Nye prefers to use bowties. His homework is to find 2 more reasons beyond the five or so that we already have.
