The purpose of this lesson had Oliver set up the equations to solve two unknown word problems and to solve them using either elimination or substitution. He completed the whole lesson of 15 problems.
Oliver completed his test on Chapter 11 – The Solar System. Then we began to review plate tectonics, geology, and cell types for his Stanford testing. We reviewed thermal energy transfer by conduction, convection, and radiation, too.
Lesson 4: Comets and Meteoroids – We added notes and pictures of comets, meteors, and meteorites to our science notebook. Then we reviewed facts on Comets and Meteoroids. Next, we took a Quiz on Lesson 4: Dwarf Planets and Other Objects. After lunch we reviewed Lessons 1-4 and took our Test on Ch11 – The Solar System.
Oliver completed a spelling quiz. He corrected grammatical mistakes in a paragraph. I introduced the next writing project by reading aloud the picture book "Art & Max" by Wiesner. Oliver will select one of Wiesner's picture books and write the story. Pictures from the book will be photocopied and made into a book with Oliver writing the words. We read a chapter in "Legend."
This activity was divided in two parts. We continued to work and completed the lesson on solving systems by substitution. Oliver then solved 4 word problems involving two unknowns. He solved the systems by elimination and substitution.
The activity consisted of Oliver solving linear equations using the method of substitution. He ended the lesson solving a word problem with two unknowns by the substitution method.
Oliver read two nonfiction articles and completed the comprehension questions. He determined the main ideas to help determine the answers to the questions. Oliver continued to work on subject verb agreement in grammar. Today he worked with compound subjects where one subject was plural and one was singular and subjects joined by either/or and neither/nor. We reviewed possessive nouns. Oliver was unclear on where to put the apostrophe in to show singular and plural possession. We reviewed spelling words and read in "Legend." For homework, Oliver should study spelling words.
Oliver completed Lessons 5.02 with assignment on The Trail of Tears, and began 5.03.

Lesson Comments
Good day! We are falling behind on our pace guide for completion, however, because Oliver is not doing much work at home. I left specific items for him to work on before next Tuesday, so we will see what next week brings.
Oliver listened to an audio of the poem, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," by Angelou. We discussed each stanza and the feelings the words created. After reading, Oliver and I discussed what the bird symbolized and the cage. He completed comprehension questions. In grammar, Oliver chose the correct present form of each verb so that it agreed with the subject. He worked with indefinite pronouns and collective nouns as subjects. He edited a paragraph for capitalization, punctuation, and spelling errors. We read in "Legend." Oliver should complete reading the chapter in "Legend" and review spelling words for homework.
The lesson was in two parts. The first activity involved solving a system of equations by graphing. The second activity involved solving a system by elimination. We talked about the importance of systems of equations and how it relates to problem solving.
