Sam was prompted to list what properties a nail polish should posses. After discussion and questioning, the following were listed. It should not be brittle, maintain color, have shine, adhere to the nail,be nontoxic, and easily removed. The following items were introduced; Nitrocellulose to form a film on the nail, acetates to act as solvents and be volatile, adhesive polymers to insure staying on the nail, pigments like chromium oxide for green, iron oxide for reds and ferrocyanids for blues. The use of plasticizers like camphor for flexibility and UV stabilizers such as benzdophenones to resist color change.

Lesson Comments
Sam's attendance has improved dramatically. Her attention span is much better and participation is improved dramatically.
Today, Sam wrote questions and answers asking one person who everyone is. Example: Quien es? Es nuestro abuelo. (singular) / Quienes son? Son nuestros abuelos. (plural) I explain: When you want to ask who a person is, use the expression Quien es? When you want to ask who several people are, use Quienes son?...W e practiced more examples. I said "Imagine Sam, you have many people's clothes in you house. Another student asks you whose they are." Example: CAMISA/TU HERMANO. La camisa es de tu hermano? Si, es su camisa.
Sam turned in her LORD OF THE FLIES take home quiz. We completed our introduction to the novel. We discussed the double journal entry. We began reading the novel. I explained annotating to Sam. She needs to annotate the novel and write her double journal entry based on her annotations.
Assignment
Double journal entry based on what we read in class.
Today, Sam and I spoke about possessive adjectives (textbook page 83). I explained expressions of possession tell you who owns something or describes a relationship between people or things. Sam wrote questions and answers. You see some clothing. You don't know whose it is. example: Es tu chaqueta? No, no es mi chaqueta./ Es tu Sueter? Si, si es mi sueter. Sam used the following vocabulary in order to complete these questions and answers. Camisas, blusa, pantalones, zapatos, falda, camiseta, caletines, vestido, jeans.
I showed Samantha how the requirement for common denominators made it necessary to always factor the denominators of every fraction and then to multiply both numerator and denominator of every expression by what it's missing of the least common denominator and then combine the numerators and simplify. Lesson Comments
Samantha was more focused today with only a few distractions.
We read and discussed a paper which dealt with the history of lip color and then the modern chemistry of lipstick production. We discussed the variety of waxes, oils, pigments, and emollients used, their basic uses and formulas. We then watched a video which showed in detail the choice of ingredients used as solvents, oils, waxes and pigments. The chemical compatibility of each with not only the other chemicals but also with the containers used.

Lesson Comments
Sam did have to leave a little early, ok'd at the desk. She was able to see first hand the complexity of the compounding and manufacturing of these products. I stressed the need for education if she really wants to get involved in this field
The plan was to introduce the topic of addition and subtraction of rational functions. The lesson would start with the rules of addition and subtraction of fractions with the requirement for all terms to have the same denominator. I would then extend that rule and the steps required to obtain same denominators for algebraic rational functions and the need to factor the numerators and denominators of all terms. Since Samantha was only present for half an hour today, I spent time reviewing topics we had covered and giving her a brief look ahead at the material we would be covering next time. There was no assignment.

Lesson Comments
Samantha walked out of her classroom just as I was going to try to teach her. She was going to a doctor's appointment, but recently, she has missed a lot of sessions with me even when she could be Skyping. She has missed too many hours and is too distracted when she is present. I also get the feeling that she is avoiding working with me and I don't want her to lose credit in math if she doesn't want to work with me.
Sam did not complete her take home test on LORD OF THE FLIES. She promised that she would complete it for tomorrow. We began by completing lesson one in the vocabulary book. Sam will put her words on quizlet so that she can study/use them better. She put the 20 words from lesson one on Quizlet. Then we began an introduction to our new novel. We ran out of time and need to continue that tomorrow.
Assignment
Complete take home assessment of LORD OF THE FLIES
