Today, Sam and I Skyped. Spanish class was about "My Family" (Textbook pages 70-75). Sam learned how to describe family, ask and tell ages, talk about birthdays, give dates and express possession ( new vocabulary esposo, hermanastro, madrastra, medio hermano, nieto and padrastro). I asked Sam a few questions (speaking skills). She is showing a greater interest in improving her speaking skills.
Sam and I completed our discussion of Chapter five. We answered the accompanying study guide questions. We then continued our study of the novel by taking turns reading chapter six stopping frequently to annotate for plot, characters and vocabulary. We then began answering the study guide questions for chapter six along with making predications of what will occur next in the novel.
We talked about 90, 180, 270, and 360 degree rotations. I used a pencil and rotated it to give Sam a visual of the clockwise and counter-clockwise rotations. I taught her some rules - when you rotate a point 180 clockwise about the origin, the coordinates map from (x,y) to (-x, -y). When you rotate a figure 90 counterclockwise, the new coordinate mapping is (x,y) to (-y,x). Also, if an object is rotated 180 or 360 degrees about the origin, the slopes of the new image will be the same as the original. If a shape is rotated 90 or 270, the slopes are opposite reciprocals. Sam worked exercises 1 & 2 on p.348, and we will continue in the next session.
I continued to work with Samantha on the chapter test which included problems on simplifying radical expressions, multiplying and dividing those expressions, rationalizing denominators, and converting from rational exponents to radical expressions. There was no assignment.

Lesson Comments
Samantha spends a lot of time talking about non-math topics.
Today, Sam and I reviewed vocabulary(dictionary) and she took a quiz. We reviewed the words by studying words from the dictionary. Sam learned new vocabulary words, used them correctly in a sentence, and understood their meaning in the text. Sam and I reviewed topics for our next test.
Sam and I reviewed the chapter and then finished reading the last few pages. We began to answer the study guide questions. We continued our study of the novel. Sam struggles with some of the vocabulary, so we discussed how to read and interpret the text and the questions.
In connection with studying and defining '"lobbying" and " interest groups", we first reviewed the Constitution's protections of the right of association and the right to petition the government. I then distributed a summary of the landmark US Supreme Court case of Citizens United vs FEC which reversed existing law by allowing corporations and labor unions to make unlimited contributions or to spend unlimited amounts to advocate issues. I then handed out a political cartoon criticizing the decision. We discussed the impact of money on elections. For homework, Sam is to answer questions on the political cartoon and to answer questions 1-4 on page 308.
