Lesson Comments
Aleya was pleasant and interested in learning the material; she asked specific questions for review. However, she was not fully prepared and I felt she needed a more extensive lesson/review yesterday for the test today.
Alayah is lovely and highly motivated from the Pine School. Her preparation challenge is overwhelming because she has so much material and it seems she is not quite sure where or whom to focus on in history. I suggested we focus on one empire and historical achievement at a time rather than feudalism in Japan and Europe at the same time. Her drive to focus on time periods "1, 2 & 3" is making studying this vast and voluminous amount of information very difficult. I explained that we should focus on each empire's/civilization's contributions/significance and relevance to world history. Alaya seemed to understand my suggested approach and we will do this during our 2-hour study session from 2:30 -4:30pm on Wed.
Alaya further prepared for her final in British Literature with John Donne's poem, The Sun Rising. We followed the procedure given by her regular English teacher -- read it through and then create three structured paragraphs (bullets for now) to explicate. Alaya did very well with this explication, answering probing questions I posed as we went through in a close reading, and appreciating my comments and the hidden humor of the second stanza. I recommended some analysis terms from critical thinking to use in her explication: point of view and inference. I also gave her a couple of tips for during the exam to do her best.
We went over a plethora of English subject topics. We discussed active and passive voice, rhyme scheme, deductive and inductive reasoning. we discussed strategies to be used when analyzing a poem and a short story. We discussed characteristics of different periods of literature including the romantic and renaissance periods. Alaya asked for clarification on a number of different terms and authors.
We worked on Alaya's creative writing assignment. We had to refer to the text frequently. We needed to plan, draft, revise and then edit the final copy. The paper is outstanding, if I do say so myself. She came prepared with the start of a plan and the very beginning written, and we progressed from there. I really enjoyed working with her.
