Lesson Outline
Sam had a book report to complete on Louis Sachar's "The Wayward School and the Cloud of Doom." The assignment was to summarize the ending (7 sentences minimum) and write an alternate ending (7 sentences minimum). I helped Sam brainstorm his ideas and organize his thoughts. He wrote the paragraphs as described, and we edited his work for clarity.

Lesson Comments
I'm going to have to be stricter with Sam. I think I let him get too comfortable in our first two sessions. Today, he was work-avoidant and quite frankly, rude. I think he is trying to be funny in a typically adolescent way, but much of what he said was inappropriate.

Sam has a test this week on the states and capitals. I pre-tested him and determined that he could identify all the states' locations, and knew all but eight capitals (Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Montana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, and Maryland). I made flashcards of the states that he didn't know for him to review. He was eager to do his math IXL homework, so I stayed 15 extra minutes to help him complete it.

Lesson Outline
After meeting Sam and offering him a snack, we got to work on a book report due tomorrow. The format for the report was a letter to the author, detailing three favorite parts (and why) and three questions (related to the book). Sam had read The Wayward School Gets Stranger by Louis Sachar. First, we brainstormed his favorite parts and questions for the author. Then, following the teacher's rubric, I helped Sam to organize his thoughts into a three-paragraph letter. We edited his work, adding appropriate spacing, capitalization, and punctuation. Sam decided to print the letter at home.

Lesson Comments
Sam was pleasant and compliant during our session. He had read the book, and brainstorming was pretty straightforward. He needs some help organizing his thoughts. The iPad settings scaffold the spelling and grammar.
