Characteristics of Life -
GT and I reviewed the characteristics of life, and discussed how all living things grow and produce offspring. I explained how our DNA is programed to reproduce itself and all living things are coded to find mates. We then examined the concept of responding to stimuli, and watched a short video showing plants moving to follow the sun, the changes in the pupil of an eye, when exposed to bright light, and skin reacts to changes in temperature. Finally GT was challenged to define homeostasis, and we explored the complex chemistry of living things. I then introduced cell theory which we will explore more next class.

Earth History -
GT and I watched the National Geographic Documentary: The Story of Earth. This film graphically shows what the Earth looked like, and the changes it went through over 4.6 billion years. Starting from just before the Earth existed, it shows how space rubble, from the birth of the Sun, crashed together to create our planet. The movie progresses through the molten early stages, through the dawn of life, and continues through the Permian extinction, the age of dinosaurs, and the first humans. We discussed the many changes the Earth had experienced prior to humans, and how each event was essential to the existence of humans. We also explored some of the themes represented in the film related to time and adaptation.

The film explored multiple expressions of Foster’s rule. We then watched the 12 days of evolution, which debunked the top twelve misunderstandings about evolution.
