Avery and I worked on building a clay cat sculpture for the duration of the day. We worked on making the form out of wire and tin foil, we then worked the clay over the form and sculpted the features. We then set it to bake.
STEM - Avery took part in a Chemical Reaction STEM Day. She completed many fun science interactive experiments.
• Make a Tornado in a Jar
• Create a Rain Cloud in a Jar
• Make a Volcano
• Watch Crayons Melt to Form Art
• Make a Lava Lamp
• Make Ice Cream in a Ziplock Bag
• Blow Up a Balloon
Math –
Addition/Subtraction –
Using an online platform titled, “Math Playground”, Avery practiced her addition and subtraction.
Graphing –
Avery completed an animal graphing activity .
Using a deck of cards Avery practiced her addition and subtraction, a fun way to practice. We played "I Spy..." and "Wild Jacks”.
Art/Math – Patterns-
Using beads to create a pattern sequence, Avery made jewelry.
Just for Fun – Pop the balloon-
Today we made some tie-dye shirts. At the same time we practiced the colors in Spanish. After that, we played the Uno card game. We went over numbers in Spanish and finished off the day by watching a few episodes of "Bluey".
Avery and I began our session with a nature walk to the park - completing a lab sheet throughout, checking off what was seen. Avery then wrote about our nature walk using her five senses. Avery then watched a 'Generation Genius' video, "Reducing Our Impact on Earth", learning to reduce, reuse, and recycle; that people can have a negative impact on Earth's land, water, and air; and that people can make a positive impact through choices we make. Avery completed a cut & paste activity, sorting pictures under 'recycle' or 'compost'. Avery used three dice to add three numbers. Avery wrote down her addition equation and the sum. Lastly, Avery and I played 'Heads Up'.
Avery was introduced to the lesson by watching a video titled,” Ryan’s World Bugs “. Then I read a book titled, “On Beyond Bugs: All About Insects” by The Cat in the Hat Learning Library. We discussed both the video and the book focusing on the parts of an insect and some specific features different insects had. Also discussed was the difference between a spider and an insect. Avery made a boat out of aluminum foil that was to emulate an ant carrying more than10 times its size and added items to it. Math - We rolled 2 dice, added them, and colored in the number on the ladybug.
Avery, Rory, and I began our session with a nature walk outside and playing on the playground. I read aloud the story, "Spiders". We had a discussion on the body parts of a spider and learned facts such as - there are 43,000 different kinds of spiders in the world and that spiders do not exist in Antartica. Avery & Rory then completed a spider web craft using a cup, yarn, a foam ball, pipe cleaners, and a hole puncher. We then interacted with kinetic sand and played store using the cash register. The girls did excellently adding up all of their cash. We then played Candyland, which was great for teaching turn-taking, patience, and winning & losing. Lastly, we completed a science experiment, inflating a balloon using a 2-liter bottle, baking soda, and vinegar, discussing vocabulary such as inflate, deflate, and chemical reaction.

Lesson Comments
I had Avery & Rory together for four and a half hours - 10:00am - 2:30pm.
Avery participated in a science experiment this morning using a STEM crystal plant kit. The experiment involved measuring, stirring, and combining a variety of ingredients together until the mixture was fully dissolved. We timed the steps in accordance with directives. The solution will begin to crystallize in 24 hours, and will be fully formed in 6 - 10 days. Avery enjoyed performing the steps of the experiment. She followed directives well and also worked well with a peer when they collaborated on certain steps of the procedure together.
