Finding totals greater than ten
Lesson Outline
Jonathan applied different strategies to find totals greater than ten. He was tasked with applying counters, connecting cubes, and 10-frames from his Math Toolkit. He also solved problems in which he used doubles to find the total, and determined which equations were true, circling the correct answer. Jonathan demonstrates fluency for addition within ten and is able to successfully use and apply strategies including counting on, making 10, and decomposing a number leading to a ten.

Lesson Outline
Language Arts: This morning we completed our daily language review for yesterday and today (since there was no school yesterday). Jonathan practiced correcting sentences and matching words based on vowel sound. He needed a little assistance with homophones and making connections such as sock:foot and mitten:(hand). We also worked through sequencing of common activities. Next, we read the poem, I’m Staying Home from School Today. In his iReady textbook, we identified which sense helped us best interpret target words in the poem and Jonathan wrote a sentence identifying what these words help us picture. Speech bubbles and thought bubbles were the focus of our next activity. We read two Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems which utilize speech and thought bubbles. We talked about each, the concept of how they are used, and incorporating them into writing. Additionally, we examined words and their synonyms for emotions and appearance that can be used in writing. We read through these two anchor charts and hung them in his room for a writing resource. For phonics work, Jonathan completed a short i /long i word sort at 100%. Finally, we ended our day with our novel study, Stink The Incredible Shrinking Kid. We read the final chapter and learned that Stink has accepted the current status of his height! We began a review of the book by completing follow up questions for previous chapters in a reader’s response journal. Jonathan is working to answer questions in complete sentences.
Religion: We began with a review of the Seven Sacraments. Jonathan was tasked with drawing a web page to share about one of the sacraments. He chose matrimony and drew a great picture. In Jonathan’s We Believe textbook, we began lesson 17, which is entitled, The Church Welcomes New Members. We read about the Sacrament of Baptism in which we become children of God and members of the Church. Baptism is the first sacrament we receive.

Why does it snow in Winter?
Lesson Outline
Today, we explored the question of why it snows in winter. We discussed vocabulary, such as thermometer, icicles, and snowflakes. We learned the temperature that is needed for something to freeze, and the make-up of snow, which occurs when water vapor freezes into ice crystals in cold clouds. Jonathan completed a few pages in his Science Student Practice book which demonstrated his comprehension of the material. I also utilized a supplemental learning activity from a corresponding 2nd grade science activity guide to consolidate emergent gains and challenge Jonathan a bit; he admirably rose to the challenge.

Application of addition strategies
Lesson Outline
Today, Jonathan learned and practiced strategies, such as using doubles and making a ten to add 2 numbers. These doubles strategies can be helpful when adding numbers that have totals between 11 and 20. We then did a hands-on activity finding totals greater than 10 using 10 index cards, 2 different colored crayons, and 19 small objects; we used pennies. Jonathan practiced doubling the numbers and adding 1. The pennies helped faciitate Jonathan's ability to visualize the problems. Through guided practice, Jonathan completed the activity and we ended the session exploring other real-life opportunities to practice finding totals greater than 10.

Cause and Effect
Lesson Outline
Jonathan began with his Wednesday Daily Language Review. He was asked to rewrite sentences that contained errors. This review touched upon capitalizing certain words in the title of a book, the use of an apostrophe to show ownership, the use of an apostrophe when it is a part of a contraction, and the use of a period and a question mark.

The next part of Jonathan's lesson focused on "cause and effect." The first activity focused on matching sets of pictures. One picture showed a "cause" and one picture showed an "effect." There were eight pictures. Jonathan found the matching pictures and then described each one, specifically describing the "cause" and the "effect."

Jonathan watched a BrainPopJunior video on "cause and effect." He independently completed a quiz about the video.

Upon completion of the quiz, Jonathan read the book, "Click Clack Moo: Cows that Type." The follow-up activity focused on examining the book for "cause" and "effect," by manipulating printed out pieces of the story and matching given "causes" to different "effects."

The lesson concluded with Jonathan and I playing a game called "Jungle Safari Main Idea."

Today’s daily language review focused on verb tense and pronouns. Next, Jonathan worked on coloring his cover page and his four illustrations to finish publishing his writing piece. He did a terrific job! We enjoyed the next chapter in our Stink The Incredible Shrinking Kid book in which Stink shared his Presidents’ Day report about his favorite president, James Madison. For phonics work today we reinforced long a with a Brain Pop Jr. on the subject. Jonathan scored a 5/5 on the hard quiz. Jonathan also scored 100% on his word sort assessment for sort 1 (short a and long a). It was nice to see him more confident with the “tricky” ones today. In his iReady textbook, we read page 85 and discussed sensory words. We talked about words that could be used to capture each sense and what some of these words help us picture in our minds. We will focus on sensory words in our reading selections. We completed a crossword puzzle to practice antonyms (without a word bank). Jonathan did well and needed help with “thick” and “buy”. Finally, for “Fun Friday”, we enjoyed playing an educational board game which focused on tasks including rhyming, vocabulary, identifying parts of speech, and naming the plural to the singular noun. Religion: Today we wrapped up lesson 16. We reviewed the Seven Sacraments and Jonathan answered questions related to this lesson we’ve covered this week. He scored 5/5 on his end of lesson assessment.

Reviewing main idea
Lesson Outline
Jonathan read a book about Martin Luther King Jr. We reviewed vocabulary words, including boycott, civil rights movement protest, racism, segregation, protest, sit-in, and Nobel Peace Prize. Jonathan demonstrated a good understanding of the material and shared some insightful comments. He then worked on a word search and showed very good perseverance and determination finding the words. Jonathan clearly enjoyed this challenge and had a productive session.
