I took a photo of Cam’s face and cropped it, so it only shows half of his face: one eye, one ear, and one half of his nose and mouth. I printed the cropped photo, and Cam cut it out and glued it on the left side of a piece of drawing paper. Cam had to draw the other half of his face to create his self-portrait. This art activity is excellent for learning symmetry and strengthening visual-spatial relationships as well as practicing shading and learning proportions. Cam drew an excellent self-portrait with good proportions, shading, and texture. Bravo!
Jackson added the stems of his sunflowers using oil pastels. He smudged the oil pastels, so they blended nicely. Then he outlined his vase and its surface design in blue ink. Then he added colored pencils in blues to create the Chinese porcelain design. He signed his name and was very happy with his artwork.
Remington created his sunflowers and stems with oil pastel. He practiced layering color and smudging the oil pastels to blend the colors. He will finish his vase tomorrow.
Aiden is attempting to draw a glazed donut with a bite taken out of it. I am challenging him to observe textures, values, and proportions to make his drawing look as photorealistic as possible.
Jackson drew his Haitangzun style Chinese vase. He had to roll the die to see what his vase’s borders, flowers, and animal would be from the design choices and then draw them. For Example: Die Roll Number 1 for a border: a roll of four is a zipper design. Die Roll Number 3 for an animal: a roll of five is a fish. After he drew his borders, flowers, and one animal, he started to draw the real sunflowers before him. He used oil pastels for his sunflowers. I had a color photo of Vincent van Gogh’s sunflowers for him to look at as well. He will be using colored pencils in shades of blues for the vase to replicate the Chinese porcelain painting.

Jackson worked on his jelly bean drawing. I taught him how to create values: highlights and shading with colored pencils to create a three-dimensional jelly bean.
