Photo Assignment -
Will was assigned to take photos of the talent show. He and I discussed the proper exposure, aperture and speed for the event and what camera angles he felt were suitable. He photographed some actors backstage, and then photographically recorded the different acts from the audience point of view. Homework: download, rename, and edit the talent show photos.

Photoshop Exposure -
Will and I examined the photos he has taken over the past few weeks. He expressed a desire to enhance some aspects of one or two photos using Photoshop. We explored the hue, saturation, and exposure tools in Photoshop. These tools can make the existing colors in an image pop, or become more subtle. This is often a good tool for sunsets. We used a photo taken during daylight, and explored how to make it appear to be a sunset using the tools. We also explored how to straighten a horizon line in a photo, and how that improves an image remarkably.

Photo Assignment -
Will took photos of students working with their teachers. He was asked to document a new flower garden in the rear of the school. We processed, labeled and prepared the photos for submission to the yearbook committee. I introduced Will to what is called the “B roll” in the film business. These are ancillary images used to describe or express the environment the characters are experiencing, show the passage of time or simply fill time. We listed some B roll images from our favorite TV shows and movies.

Will and I discussed the storytelling aspect of photography. Will was tasked with imagining photos he would take to illustrate stories he has read, which did not have imagery. Will was asked to take some photos of students as they interacted with their teachers. Will also prepared images of school wide activities to submit for the yearbook.

Will was challenged with finding images of his dog, from the past year, and placing them in another of his photos. The dog has aged and it was important to see how Will had captured the puppies' gradual development. This was also an excellent review of using the magic wand, and resize tools in Photoshop.

Will was given an exercise designed to give him some comfort in using the name changer software. He was given a set of files, to rename as he was directed. He was challenged to renumber the files, to add a word to the front of the name of the files, or insert characters into the name of the files. He was also shown how to remove characters from anywhere in the title or change any portion of the names. Homework: rename the files by adding a date to the start of the name, and a word to the end of the files and then renumber the files.

Name Changer Email -
Will and I worked with the name changer app, which allows him to rename the photos, after they have been downloaded from his camera. The name protocol we agreed to was to give each image a name including the date the photo was taken, and Will’s initials along with the photo number. This will give him the ability to share images with the information about the event from which the photo was taken. We practiced by naming photos from his collection. We then reviewed the process of sending his images by email. His original photos are of such a large size they cannot be sent by email. We used Photoshop to reduce the size. Will first created an automated process to reduce the images by 50%. We practiced renaming, resizing and emailing images. Will also asked questions about a movie he is making at home. Homework: rename a set of photos and email five of those images to me.

Name Changer -
Will and I examined his photos of the Holiday Party. We then discussed how to give the files names that help when cataloging his photographs. I introduced him to an application that changes the names of batches of files (called name changer). We downloaded the free app and worked through understanding the process. We made a folder of his holiday photos and gave every photo a name that reflects when and by whom the photo was taken.
