Today we reviewed chapters 4 & 5 in "Treasure Island." Since the story involves reading treasure maps, travel and adventure we began our look at how to accurately read maps. We reviewed how maps show us continents, countries, states and/or counties, and cities. A continent is one of several large land masses on the Earth, usually separated by oceans. A country is a nation with its own government, occupying a particular territory. A state or county is a political or administrative region within a country, providing certain governmental services. Mercer is adept with Google maps, but our goal today was to review how to read regular maps and globes, as well.
Work on pp. 139 - 143 in science book including vocabulary terms and definitions for physical change, chemical change, Law of Conservation of Mass, Law of Conservation of Energy. Mercer was then given time to go online and look up crazy science experiments.

Bari subbed for Teresa for science today as Andrew Mohler was out sick last period. Teresa left great substitute plans. Unfortunately, it turns out, we couldn't do the above lesson as Mercer said he didn't have his science book. I looked in his room cabinet and couldn't find his science book. I asked him if it was at home. He said, "I never take it home." Mercer said he thought he saw his science book last week, but couldn't remember where. His copy of "Hank the Cow Dog" met the same, fate, as well. So we spent the period working on Geography and reviewed some more of "Treasure Island."
Start Lesson 3 sketches. Start by learning to draw a cube. Learn how to measure and shade a cube. Learn the differences between a square and a cube. Draw the human figure using cubes. Study vocabulary for Lesson 3.

Mercer is doing great with Lesson 3. He wanted to add some details to his lesson 1 project so we did that and then started working on is sketches.
Peel up the masking tape that is under the black ink to reveal the skeleton. Go over Lesson 3 PowerPoint. Students should know the terms: Form, 3D, Geometric vs Organic forms and how to measure a form.

Mercer is all caught up an did great on his lesson 2 project. I will have him do some of the sketches that Andrew is doing because I think he is capable and needs a challenge to keep him engaged.
