Today's lesson focus continued lessons on the earliest humans. Mercer read material about cave paintings and housing structures of the Neolithic era. Mercer answered questions based on the unit material about locations where the earliest humans lived.

Lesson 1 Introduction to Matter:
We learned which tools are used to measure mass and weight. Next we learned that volume is the amount of space an object takes up or occupies. We compared the volume of a bowling ball to a balloon and learned that though their volumes are similar their masses are not. Then we learned why a triple-beam balance is the instrument used to measure mass. Next we learned that mass is the same on the moon as it is on the Earth but weight differs because the force of gravity is less on the moon. Then we reviewed which tools are used to measure mass and weight. Then we were introduced to ways to measure volume. We learned that whether you use a formula or displacement 1 mL of water is equal to 1 cm³.
Assignment: Complete problems to find the volume of a lunchbox and a locker.

Today's lesson focus was on prehistoric man. Mercer read material about a body found by an archaeologist they named Otztal. He participated in answering questions and discussing how archaeologists could tell what the man ate before he died and how he died. Mercer spent the remainder of class learning fun facts about geography.

We took turns reading "Hank the Cowdog" and discussed the relationship between Hank and his sister, whom he was visiting. I explained new vocabulary and wrote the words on Mercer's list of new words.

We reviewed quarter notes and rests, and read through some exercises in the Alfred’s Snare Drum Method book. We also did the quarter note combination study. We then began learning to CPI t and read eighth notes, and we sight read some exercises from Lesson 2 in the Alfred’s book.

We practiced vocabulary in Spanish and played chess.

Mercer began exercises from the 6th grade math Envision textbook, Absolute Value/Integers.

Mercer spent the remainder of the class reviewed fun facts from real-life lore. He participated in discussing archaeological evidence to support his findings.

Lesson 1 Introduction to Matter:
We learned the properties that define matter. We wrote definitions for new vocabulary. Then we learned that light and sound are not matter because they don’t have mass or take up space. We observed that air has mass since a balloon weighs more when it is inflated. We learned that weight is the measure of gravitational force on an object and things weigh less on the moon since there is less gravity.
Assignment: Create a table in your science notebook to record the mass of a deflated balloon and inflated balloon. Then calculate and record the mass of the air that you blew into it.
