Bella was not responding to my calls. At 11:23, she texted through Teams that she would be here in 5 minutes, but despite our class remaining open for her on Teams to join, I didn't hear from her. I moved today's lesson plan to Monday. Happily, Bella did appear just before noon with her Dad and their beautiful new puppy, Jules! Everyone was loving on Jules and Bella was excited to share him with everyone at lunch. So sweet!!!!
What Is Local Government? - Definition, Responsibilities & Challenges
Lesson Outline
City, town, and county governments are all examples of local governments. City and town governments are municipal governments. This means that they can pass local laws. County governments do not have this power. However, county governments are the largest subdivision of government within a state. A law passed by a local government is called an ordinance. Local governments have many responsibilities, including enforcing laws, running libraries, maintaining parks, and running city utilities. Tax assessment is usually not part of local government.
In today's class, we would have continued our discussion on genetics, including talking about Mendel's experiments and laws, dominant and recessive traits and punnett squares. Bella would have taken notes that followed along with the material.

Bella was absent from my class today because she was getting ready and leaving her house to come into school during our class time. We will continue what we would have done today on Monday.
Today, Bella continued working on her Othello essay outline. She selected the topic of racism. We refined her body paragraph topic sentences, citations, and elaboration. In a shared doc, she then began typing her essay. We reviewed proper MLA format and I went over how to complete a Works Cited page. We reviewed the hourglass concept of essay writing.

What Is State Government? - Powers, Responsibilities & Challenges
Lesson Outline
The US has 50 state governments. These governments work in tandem with the federal government. Like the federal government, state governments are divided into three branches: the executive, legislative and judicial. Some of the main responsibilities of state governments include: running state police and corrections, administering the state education system, maintaining state properties and facilities. State governments must abide by their state's constitution. State constitutions are regularly amended. The powers and responsibilities of the state government apply only within their own borders, not within those of other states, and do not take precedence over federal law.

Today's lesson was remote. Mr. Fatata shared the condition of their beautiful new puppy, Jules, when they got him. I re-sent Bella the Humane society link and the entire printout with other links concerning federal and state laws for the treatment of animals. It has many links ranging from, Steps to Follow to make a complaint, Complaint Forms, Spreadsheet on the minimum laws puppy mills and breeders must abide by in all 50 states. It looks like Kansas (where Jules came from) has pretty light punishments for those who don't employ a standard of care in breeding animals. Mr. Fatata knows I sent this to them, too. The good news is that Mr. Fatata says he thinks Jules is improving.

Which States Have the Most Puppy Mills? Missouri and Iowa are considered the leading puppy mill states in the country. The highest concentration of puppy mills is in the Midwest, but there are also high concentrations in other areas, including Pennsylvania, Ohio and upstate New York. Bella's new puppy, Jules, is a beautiful little boy! He arrived to FL from a "breeder" in Kansas on 12/30 and he arrived in horrible shape. He was filthy and sick with kennel cough and a flu! Bella was home today looking after him as he is on a course of medications, antibiotics and needs to be fed six times a day, in small portions, on a special diet. I shared with Bella that there are federal laws that protect animals bred in mills. In 1966, Congress passed the Animal Welfare Act, which outlines specific minimum standards of care for dogs, cats and some other kinds of animals bred for commercial resale. The AWA is enforced by the United States Department of Agriculture. Under the AWA, certain large-scale commercial breeders are required to be licensed and regularly inspected by the USDA. But there are many inefficiencies and loopholes in the system. I sent Bella a link from the Humane Society which discusses the AWA and how to file a complaint against a puppy mill or breeder. Bella is going to show it to and discuss it with her Dad.

Bella shared she is being "stalked," by her former friend, Kadence. You may recall Kadence visited here at school several times last summer. Some of the things Bella shared with me are concerning. I think it's important to document and I urged Bella to share what's going on with her Dad.
