Media Bias & Criticism: Definition, Types & Examples
Lesson Outline
What is media bias? Media bias occurs everywhere throughout society because of the natural bias associated with not being able to experience and fully understand every viewpoint. There is also political bias that occurs in media, and the political bias definition is a piece of media made to distort a story based on one's political agenda. Every bias includes bias news examples in which a story is distorted through a certain method. Media bias examples include bias through selection and omission. Bias through selection and omission occurs naturally when one chooses to watch one news channel over the other. Omission bias examples occur within media production when certain facts are left out regarding a story. Bias by placement indicates an agenda being fulfilled through where the newspaper or media outlet places the story. If a headline is buried in a small corner on the last page, it is much less likely to be seen than if it were on the front page. Lastly, bias through labeling occurs when a piece of media makes assumptions about a certain group or assigns a certain attribute to that identity without any real analysis.
