A New Form of Government for the New United States of America
Lesson Outline
By 1786 many Americans observed that the Articles of Confederation were not working. George Washington himself agreed that the United States was really "thirteen small countries pulling against each other." By spring of 1787, Washington joined delegates from Virginia and 11 other states who gathered on Philadelphia to address this problem. Rhode Island decided not to participate. The delegates came for the sole and express purpose of revising the Articles of Confederation. We began by reviewing the weaknesses in the the Articles of Confederation - the first form of federal government in the new U.S. that governed the 13 states from 1776 - 1787.

Lesson Comments
This is a vital area of U.S. History that both Bella and Sam missed earlier in the year. We are starting these classes with the creation of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. Today's class was remote. Bella notified school 30 minutes before class that she would be at home today.

The Tale of Two cities
Lesson Outline
Today's lesson focused on the book "The Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickerson. Bella reviewed the first three chapters of the novel and discussed significant themes of the book. Bella discussed the characters in the book, their sympathies to overthrow the French government and the social injustices presented. Bella answered questions about concepts in the book, such as the ruling class's revenge, justice, integrity, and corruption in the French government. She discussed the effect of these concepts on ordinary people and what the long-term consequences would be if this practice became the norm.

Topic 9 Solving Quadratic Equations
Lesson Outline
9-2 Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring – We practiced using the Zero-Product Property and factoring to find the solutions of a quadratic equation. Then we calculated the vertex. Next we used the zeros of a quadratic equation and the vertex to sketch the graph. Next we reviewed how to write the factored form of a quadratic function from the graph.
9-3 Rewriting Radical Expressions – We learned about radicals, radical expressions, and perfect square factors.
Assignment: Complete the assigned problems for homework and the take home quiz.

Bella read and analyzed the short story The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell. Upon completion of the reading we discussed the following themes from the short story: The world is made up of two classes – the hunters and the huntees, Who cares how [a hunted animal] feels…[they only] understand one thing – fear of pain and fear of death, Instinct is no match for reason. The topics allowed Bella to think and argue her point with excellent facts for support. We then continued the novel Wonder.

Topic 9 Solving Quadratic Equations
Lesson Outline
9-1 Solving Quadratic Equations Using Graphs and Tables – We reviewed how to use a graph to identify the x-intercepts as solutions of a quadratic equation. If the graph of the function has no x-intercepts then the equation has no real solutions. If the graph touches the x-axis but does not cross it then there is only one x-intercept and one real solution. Next we practiced finding the vertex of the parabola by putting the equation in the form ax2 + bx + c and calculating the x-coordinate by the formula –b/2a and
we found the y-coordinate by using the formula –b/2a. Next we plugged the x-coordinate of the vertex into the original quadratic equation to find the y-coordinate of the vertex. Bella did some practice problems to ensure that she is prepared to do her homework.

Bella watched a movie and had to determine the theme, analyze the plot and its various phases, examine how literary elements affect plot progression, assist in character development, and convey meaning, including the motif, symbol, foreshadowing, echoing, flashback, opposition, metaphor, irony, foil, choice of language; and organize their thoughts. I stopped the movie at various points and she orally discussed the above points. She enjoyed the literary analysis of the movie.
